Did anyone watch Panorama on monday?
The programme was limited in it’s coverage, it really needed to be an hour long to look at young as well as older people, and places apart from Merthyr Tydfil with it’s particular problems, and employers thoughts & experiences.

When the guy came off SB and they reduced his UB rate, he had to cut down on smoking! Poor chap!

Do you have personal experience or strong views based on your local area?

I’ve been unemployed and since back at work I get more done!
I make better use of my time and can afford international travel.
Work developes you as a person, though some jobs are a waste of time.

IMO the best comments from the Panorama website are:-
“I’m an occupational therapist working in NHS mental health services. I would estimate that 99% of the people I work with actually want to work. What stops them? Well known barriers such as the benefit trap, often it’s the time they’ve been away from work and thus the thought of returning may exacerbates anxiety/depression. It can be loss/lack of skill or simply just the wrong kind of heavy handed PRESSURE – the more pressured people feel the more likely they are to retreat or maybe end up in a job which doesn’t suit them – which in turn may end up with higher stress level and consequently may lead to mental health problems. …I could go on, but rehabilitation is, in my opinion the missing link and encouragement to do / recognition of voluntary work to build on skills / gain qualifications etc. We need to encourage people to work in a job they feel proud of.”

“you no longer have a role in society”

I was on Incapacity for about 18 months because of a back problem a few years back.
i have allways done heavy manual work so when i injured my back i signed on. i told them i cant do my old job anymore but i still want to work so i asked for some sort of retraining. firstly they told me i had to be unemployed for 12 months i think it was before i could go on a training course. They then sent me to a disabilty adviser and after about 8 months all they could offer me is a minicab course, not even a black cab.

The whole system is a joke, they want people back to work but they do nothing to help.
I think it was that programme on monday that said to get everyone off incapacity in wales they would have to create about 30,000 new jobs.

Its like most things, only the unskill or people who never really got into working use it.

I think the main problem is that there no real route back into work.

Most people on sickness benfit are untrain and unskilled.

If you are off for a while, you should keep busy and do something to keep your mind working.

Being stuck in the house for 6 months can drive you mad.

The other are people who see sickness benfit has a “eary state pension”.

But most people who take home above £500 can’t afford to be on it. If your only taking home about £200 and getting “help” you can.

Its like most things, only the unskill or people who never really got into working use it.

Is being on the sick long-term like growing old early?
I mean you have less energy, do less adventurous things, have less money, tend to be a bit bitter, talk about the good old days, take up low-cost pastimes.

Or do you have more time to reflect on life, self-heal from years in the rat-race doing things that didn’t make you happy?

What are some good suggestions for those in this position?
    Do an open university degree?
