I’ve been very lucky in the past six months as a local lady has been selling off her collection of Golly’s (much to the distaste of others) I’ve purchased quite a few for my lil princess… and explained to her WHY some people have issues with the dolls! Neither me nor her see anything beyond them being a toy from my childhood.. she also has Frustration and Battleships. Innocence is a fab thing to posses, as is knowledge! I would like to think that I have raised my children well and taught them to accept all regardless of faith, race, sexual orientation etc. The gollys wont affect that!

I’ve never seen anything but a doll in a golliwog….and never will.
Shall we start a thread on Barbie dolls next (or even one on a Sindy or a Bild Lilli) , as they apparently represent (or used to), the female ideal ?
Wonder what people’s thoughts on that would be.
Same here … it’s a doll … that is what is has always been called… a golliwog!
The trouble these days is .. too many sensitive souls – and before anyone even thinks of suggesting it … NO I am not racist .
I have a black brothern law and two black nieces. As much as I would like to agree with you netty, you have no idea how nasty some people can be. I get it all the time being a travler
I seem to recall a while back something about the nursery rhyme ” baa baa blasheep “being deemed as not good, and the words should be changed ……. blimey, it all goes too far sometimes I think.Or maybe it’s just me? :-k 8-[
It will always be baa baa black sheep , and a golliwog to me.

Did I miss the punchline?
7 August, 2015 at 5:26 pm #527481You know when I was a kid a golly was just that a golly. Baa baa black sheep was a traditional nursery rhyme & one of our favourite stories at school was a book called Little Black Sambo …. god forbid.
Get real PC folk – He was a black boy called Sambo, There was no racist intent. The colour of a persons skin doesn’t matter to a child we’re all different.
I brought my two up with that view …. people are people all have feelings regardless of the colour of their skin.
Racism has been created by society … the innocence has been taken away from most things in life these days – huge deals made making racism an even bigger issue.
Kids are now singing Baa baa rainbow sheep ….. wtf is that all about. Hands up who has seen a rainbow sheep in a field anywhere.
No wonder kids are confused .. The innocence of childhood has been ruined by do-gooders making big deals of things.
Don’t get me wrong I know racism had become an issue but banning golliwog dolls, a well loved children’s story & a nursery rhyme because it causes offence …. to who exactly ?
The world has gone mad. I for one am glad to see the return of the golly. :)
