No, they’re not the first to ever act and live like this etc.
But the Oxford background tells us a lot about the leaders of the Tory brexiteers, who are actually now charged with running the country. It’s a very different background fomr the posh Nigel Farage, who didn’t go to Oxford but went straight into the City to become a stockbroker. Farage has a very different style, repulsive in a different way.
I don’t think they particularly fck things up. They don’t know what they’re doing – the tutorial style at Oxford where three or four students are pushed into a room to present an essay and defend the arguments against a (sometimes alcoholic) tutor reinforces the public school education of giving you great self-confidence to bullshyte your way though the most difficult questions tells you a lot about them.
But that doesn’t affect their fcking things up.
Churchill (public school but not Oxford), when he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in the early Middle Ages when I was a lad, complained that he didn’t know the first thing about economics and wasn’t even good at counting. The PM’s reply was, that he had people to do that for him, and all he had to do was to provide the confidence and panache to fool people that he knew what he was doing.
So I don’t think they’re going to fck things up. I just think that they are having to manage something deeply fcked up which is going to end in tears for us all no matter what happens on Hallowe’en.

I think everyone’s passion for what they believe in has been ground into the mud, no matter which side you support …. tragic really
25 June, 2019 at 4:51 am #1116023Won’t effect me
1 I’m not staying in a country run by Johnson you’d have to be mentally unstable to even think of staying with him in charge
2 I had thunder and lightning in summer I want summer weather so I’m going where I get sun in summer

Yes, the excitement of Independence Day, with patriotic parties etc, is less likely by now. Brexit is beginning to feel like a passing issue.
Hope so anyway.
But it’s good that the passion is going, if it is going. I’m not passionate about the EU – not sure how you can be, personally. I just think we’ll end up much worse off; if someone thinks we’ll be better off, then the issue can be discussed rationally if the passion is going.
Things might get pretty nasty this autumn as it comes to a head, but we’ll see.
Let’s hope not.
