Officials in Stockton-on-Tees are trying everything they can think of to beat obesity, which cost local NHS trusts nearly £27 million in 2007
On the front line of Britain’s fight against obesity lies a town with a guilty secret — it has an abiding passion for pork pies.Stockton-on-Tees eats more of them than anywhere else in the region according to suppliers, who sell off surplus pies to local butchers. Perhaps that’s one reason why the town was named as the country’s capital for childhood obesity in Department of Health figures released this week.
There is significant blip in pie eating figures near to where i live (i say near) :?
20 May, 2010 at 12:12 pm #440684Of course, its always the less well off who suffer the most. Take the price of organic produce for instance, the wealthy can afford this easily… not to mention the north south divide…. whichever way this is looked at, it boils down to weakness. I myself dont have funds to buy organic foods but, i limit my eating sensibly… and, exercise is the key here….. having said that, it will be the wealthy who can afford the ” take away ” meals and fast foods more frequently which in turn, will create obesity. I might just check the obesity levels in children, they often fall victim to the ” fast food ” mentality of their parents… :o
