Yesterday I was in a shopping centre with my sister, a local gym were touting for membership and for a laugh we had our BMI calculated… apparently I have a BMI of 25.9 which means I am slightly overweight :(
My sister on the other hand has a BMI of 27.9! this made us laugh as my sister is super fit, she plays squash and is a national netball coach she watches her diet and swims 50 lengths every morning, what made us laugh even more is the girl dealing with us looked very gravely at my sister and told her she was approaching the 30 mark which would mean she was obese!
Its well known muscle weighs heavier than fat so maybe that explains part of it… even so it makes you question the obesity figures.
I saw the report earlier in the week about overweight people having to pay more for plane flights etc, seems we might all have to be a size zero to qualify for a standard ticket if this experience is anything to go by!
Happy with my size….. Teapot
5 February, 2011 at 9:33 am #460686Lol Mrs T.I would have had to tell them that it just showed how misleading BMI ratings could be.
I didn’t really know how a persons BMI was calculated so i googled it.There are so many reasons that you can get false ratings that i dont see how it can be classed as reliable.Seems to me it has more loopholes than one of Annette’s cardies.

And there’s the answer…they were touting for membership!
In the old days gyms dismissed things like BMI and accepted that everyone was an individual and did individual assessments. Yes they took note of your weight, height, etc. but they also used one of those threatening-looking caliper devices that pinched and measured your fat levels at various points of your body. Old fashioned? Maybe but it worked.
My brother-in-law is a weightlifter and has a well-rounded exercise programme around weights and cardiovascular exercise. His BMI is 43, classed as extremely obese, yet there isn’t an ounce of fat on him.
All BMI is good for is scaring people!

5 February, 2011 at 4:31 pm #460694Thought i would share a picture of my meal today, fresh from under the grill. . . Tuna pasta bake. My favorite. :P
Restricting myself to one meal a day can be very hard at times but, two things are made certain . . . I will enjoy it when i do eat and it will remind me daily of the greed of some people and why i restrict myself.
Obesity unless caused by health issues is nothing other than absolute greed, eat when you are hungry, it’s very simple ! :D
