According to a report out today, the millions of pounds worth of money invested in some towns in the North (Sunderland and Hull for example) will never regenerate the areas, and people should accept defeat and just move South. The academic who wrote the report said that green belt restrictions should be relaxed so that 3 million homes can be built near Oxford and Cambridge.
Some of the arguments are that whereas 100 to 200 years ago the North had good links to trade because of shipping. Now, with close ties with Europe, the South has the advantage, as the rest of Europe is errr South. And, that no amount of money will encourage businesses to move into cities which are dying.
I think that was the gist of it anyway.
What say you all?
13 August, 2008 at 6:56 pm #362371They can fuck right off… enough of them and foreigners scrounging around here as it is.

Wasn’t the academic who wrote it a German?
13 August, 2008 at 7:03 pm #362373I think the North gets its fair share of foreigners, but the South East is much too full as it is in my opinion. A good many people already relocate to where the jobs are anyway, and if that means South, they come South.
But should a massive amount of people really give up on their home towns and move?

He is called Tim Leunig. But he sounded English when I saw him being interviewed on the news.
13 August, 2008 at 7:06 pm #362375It was a right of centre think tank that came out with this rather ridiculous idea anyway Mims, one which Cameron has distanced himself from. Perhaps if northerners worked harder they’d not feel the need to rely on the south.
13 August, 2008 at 8:27 pm #362376Strange innit how most of the manual industry was midlands or northern based until Maggie the foookin battle axe Thatcher took it upon her to crush the mining industry,so don’t bleat on about the southerners being better grafters,my foookin ar se,i’ve worked in lots of parts of Britain and most of the manual labour is done by northerners while the fat cat lazy bastads, usually from the south i do admit, sit in their offices lining their ever fattening wallets with money made by the hard grafters. Before you say it was only the mines, well it wasn’t,the North East had the largest chemical site in europe also possibly the largest steel works in europe besides lots of other industry, this was all until yet again the knowledgeable Tory government took it upon themselves in their wisdom to ship it in from foreign countries……false economy me thinks….. ffs Middlesbrough football club built a bastad stadium with about eighteen million pounds worth of steelwork and other fabricated materials….ffs it was shipped in from Germany when there was a steelworks about 3 miles down the road….this was all because the German industry was government subsidised, whereas our governments decided to hit our industry with extra tax bills……….foook ive lost it now but i hope ya get the gist……and once again as for the lazy….go onto any building site in the south and i’d wager that you hear lots of Northern english and scottish accents, all because they don’t mind getting their hands dirty……. oh before anyone thinks that the North East is a wasteland,it is currently undergoing a multi million pound revamp which would be helped all the more if the southern fat cats wernt snapping up all the cheap property…….right me is off for a rest now.
Remember ….. i don’t foookin care
