I agree thats its good that America has voted in a mixed race president but feel the guy is not getting enough credit for being the best candidate. Its almost as if he won the election solely on colour. If you believe the press McCain selected Palin after meeting her twice. From her performances since does that not show a serious lack of judgment on his part. Would you want that sort of decision making running your country. Hopefully given time he can project the right image and less of the arrogance America tends to show on the world stage leading to a more peaceful world for all of us.

Allan- he did win the election solely on his colour- he totally galvanised a black (and partially) Hispanic vote- 96% of ALL Afro Americans who voted, sided with Obama. When you consider there was only 2% between the two candidates, the black block vote was the decider.
Obama did not aim to “win” the black vote, nor did was he in any way black focussed but his advisors (and Obama) knew what would happen.
It does not detract from his abilities or his skills but he is in the White House because his colour persuaded millions of non white Americans to vote for him and to vote Democrat.

Ahem.. I would just like to point out .. I do not want to see Obama assassinated, nor will I be assassinating him myself.
Knew I should have kept off this section..  :D :D :P
Yoda, I apologize for jumping on your back regarding your post. The issue I had is that it looks as if you are judging all Americans as gun toting assassins who really didn’t want what the majority of the people voted for. I’m a realist. I realize that there are people who will take aim at Obama. But, every leader has that reality over their head. Especially the leader of the U.S. Obviously, we are not well liked.Cas – Let’s just stick to the subject here. Yes dear, I do remember the floods. Kind of hard to forget but thanks for enlightening me
Slayer – Race played a big part in this election. Coupled with the fact that Bush’s approval ratings are so low. Obama ran his campaign on change, he speaks eloquently, Hollywood elites are on his side and the media is ultra liberal and skews a lot what they put on the airways. Hilary was more conservative and not as much of a socialist. She is seen as somebody who would keep politics as “business as usual”
Mary J – I believe that presidents are sworn in on January because they have to once again tally the votes to make certain nothing was missed. It’s kind of a check and double check type of thing.
Ok – Phew! Have I missed anything?
I spent too much damn time on this post :x
Like I said, I didn’t vote for him, but I support him because he is going to by my president and I hope he succeeds.
AW, does that mean Bush is still incharge until he’s sworn in then..?? and has he got his basketball court being built yet..?? and will u tell him he canny prove he’s a scot either lol

I feel quite sorry for him really, poor bugger just has to wait til he’s assasinated now
Unlikely. Anyone who can raise 5$ billion just for campaign funds would be, imho, fairly well insulated from outside threat. Consider the movements of Air Force One at the time of the Twin Tower and other attacks. You’re either being sensational again ! or – truly believe – that poor lilbama gwanna be sweepin porch out front . . . .

I agree with your opinion in that yes he will be well insulated from an OUTSIDE threat, but it’s not the outside threats he should be worried about is it.
Just look beyond the surface for once. The surface they want you to believe.
I’m always sensational ..
8 November, 2008 at 11:46 am #386385I suppose no matter what way you look at it, the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the US is monumental.. and I welcome it.
But let there be no question that he’s inherited a mixed bag of political and socio-economic horrors.
It is also worth pointing out, that despite the uber-blah of record turnouts etc, Obama polled WORSE than recent Democratic, Presidential hopefuls Gore and Kerry in the south.
And despite the fact that Obama is of mixed racial descent, make no mistake, America is still a deeply divided nation.Cynics would also point to the fact that Obama has no real record of maverick policy flourishing. Some go so far as intimating that he has no history at all  . Pretty much falling in with his party’s mantra for most of his short career, some may say he seems a curious drone like creature catapulted to high office through a mixture of clever campaigning, commercial sanctioning, the “He’s not Bush” factor (stable doors and bolting horses come to mind) and general “safe-betism”. The latter being an interesting paradox considering his very, very short time on the political landscape. It is here (and in the natural charisma stakes) where he falls short of the likes of say.. a Bill Clinton and in certain respects to a John Kennedy, though JFK was a relative newcomer also.
Similarities with Kennedy are significant though. Chief among them being that Obama is a remarkably eloquent and assured public speaker. His victory speech the other evening/morning was exceptional. There is no doubting the man has presence.. and purpose.
It is an interesting, tragic curio that as the new African American President stood on the threshold, carnage and craziness continued in the Congo.
Hopefully the niggling (and, to be honest, quite natural) reservations people have with his meteoric rise to power can be more or less put to bed once the serious work begins.
The world waits.8 November, 2008 at 7:07 pm #386386Guys just another Tony Blair, all style and no substance :?
