Steve Wright had no history of violence but he had one conviction for burglary- the police took a DNA swab when arrested and saved that DNA on a national database.
When Steve Wright killed 5 women in a very short space of time, the DNA they found on 4 of them matched with his DNA and he was arrested.
Without this DNA database, it is CERTAIN more women would have died before the police caught him- with the database, they not only caught him but very easily secured a conviction.
I know this has partly been discussed before, but a national database would be a fundamental asset in the detection of crime..and with publicised imporved detection is an automatic reduction in overall crime- FEAR is what stops criminals (thats why the death penalty should be brought back tomorrow) and fear of being caught- make it more likely they’ll get caught and they’ll be less likely to commit the crime
Return the fear to the criminal
21 February, 2008 at 11:26 pm #313566Quite rightly so Slayer…where big crimes are involved..but I see this an another invasion on regular people..it bothers me as the people in authority just don’t seem to get it right.
21 February, 2008 at 11:48 pm #313567Police already have a crime data base.
It dont stop scum doing stuff though does it.
Because the law above the Police is heavier than ever.
21 February, 2008 at 11:50 pm #313568Well you know better than me Shaz….the whole thing in the wrong hands etc
21 February, 2008 at 11:53 pm #313569its just the law that people in the law have to work with is horrendous.
Why do so many think they can carry knives? Because they can! Who is going to stop them?
But the government think that drinking and smoking are the headlines. And reflect the worry on to us… the average voters.
flippin smoke screen as always.
They cannot admit that Great Britain aint great no more. :(

A while back I would have thought a Database was a bad idea. It’s kinda hard however to argue with it’s logic when it could catch people like this.

From todays BBC news
The Chief Constable of Lincolnshire, in this article, is quite clear-
“If there was a national database of everybody then we would solve more crime, of that there is absolutely no doubt”
The choice belongs to us- more, publicised criminal solutions will mean less crime committed-
Civil liberty or public protection? They are the only 2 choices we face over this

Yep exactly right, and here is another reason why we need a national DNA database. Read the mothers statement, try to imagine what she went through, then tell me we shouldn,t have the death penalty.
link23 February, 2008 at 10:10 am #313574absolutely no doubt in my mind
The re introduction of the death penalty should be a fundamental cornerstone of any manifesto at the next election
It won’t be of course but we can but hope
I shudder to think how many murders, rape, assaults etc could be siolved tomorrow if we suddenly had a national DNA database
Instead, we have murderers, rapists walking free in our midst and unlikely to be caught
