The relationship between Newcastle United and Northern Rock, which seemed destined to fall apart due to financial pressures, has been sealed for another four years after the two parties agreed a sponsorship deal worth a potential £10m.

The bank, which is restructuring after being nationalised during the 2008 financial crisis, will be the Championship club’s main sponsor and will have its name on the black and white-striped strip, continuing a partnership that began in 2004.

Hoffman, the bank’s chief executive, said it was “mindful of our responsibilities under government ownership”, saying it only considered advertising and promotion deals that delivered a high return on investment and were a good commercial fit.

He added: “Brand awareness and promotion are important elements in the continuing development of the company.’’

Mike Ashley, Newcastle United’s owner, has twice tried to sell the club he bought in 2007 for £134m. The founder of the Sports Direct retail chain saw the club’s value decline as it failed to avoid relegation from the Premier League last season

Has Northern Rock no sense at all… i mean Newcastle Utd ffs
