    No, they are wrong.

In your ethnocentric way of thinking then yes they are

It does in Saudi Arabia, and other countries. Thats the way they do things.

You are litterally defending the execution of gay people.

Is that your way of saying “The brown people don’t know any better”, I don’t see how else you could read that.

In Saudi Arabia and countries where its illegal to be gay and punishable by execution I do yes, I feel I have to respect their culture and way of doing things no matter how different it is to my way of thinking. If you were born in Saudi Arabia, no doubt you’d approve of gay executions.

“Executing gay people is something we have to respect” … right

Perhaps, but I would probably still be gay if I was born with the same genetics so I wouldn’t approve of my own execution.

But I will ignore this for now, and I will ask you something else. Where does culture stop? If someone moves from Saudi Arabia to the UK, is it still okay for them to execute gay people? If its not, then why isn’t it? It’s still their culture.

The very simple answer is, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Why does that saying even exist ? Aint no smoke without fire. If you dont like what they do in Rome, dont go there. I have never been to Saudi Arabia.

I don’t understand cultural relativism at all. So where do you think British culture exists? Is Northern Ireland part of British culture? Is the culture in Northern Ireland different than the culture in England? If they are different how can they both be part of British culture? If someone living on the border walks down the street and into Scotland do they stop being part of English culture? Are people in Wales who speak Welsh wrong because they don’t speak the cultural language of Britain, which is English? Or should English speaking Welsh people only speak welsh because it’s Welsh culture?

How do you define any of this?

Cultures don’t exist in isolation to each other, and two oposing cultures can’t just ignore each other when they overlap.

I agree with drac on this.

A man called Michael Walzer is the chief philosopher of cultural relativism, and took tapioca’s view that when in Rome, you do as the Romans do.

He once called me the embodiment of evil, mind you lol

In Inca Peru, child sacrifice was acceptable. In India, there were areas where a woman was burned on the pyre with her legal owner (her husband).

Call me a big softie but I don’t think either are acceptable.

So where do you think British culture exists?

in Britain and other parts of the world that have adopted it.

Is Northern Ireland part of British culture?

    Yes

Is the culture in Northern Ireland different than the culture in England?

Yes, but not neccessarily different enough to warrant a break, like say Eskimo culture would be.

If they are different how can they both be part of British culture?

because Britsh culture is diversified, it has to be to embrace 4 nations. The United Kingdom wouldn’t exist and be united enough to exist if the variations in culture were too great. Different countries can and do share cultures. Look how many different diverse countries embrace Islamic culture, spanish speaking culture.

If someone living on the border walks down the street and into Scotland do they stop being part of English culture?

Yes, but they still remain part of British culture.

Are people in Wales who speak Welsh wrong because they don’t speak the cultural language of Britain, which is English?

No. British culture embraces several languages. Gaelic Welsh Irish Scots and Cornish, maybe more.

should English speaking Welsh people only speak welsh because it’s Welsh culture?

No. They should speak whichever language they choose. But as British citizens they will find it most helpful and neccessary if they can speak English so they pretty much all do.

Cultures don’t exist in isolation to each other

Yes they do. Eskimos, Pygmies, Amazonias, New Guinea, and other remote areas.

two oposing cultures can’t just ignore each other when they overlap.

Who said they should? Why cant they live next door peacefully, and embrace each other? Like Britain and France, or Italy and Switzerland,

We are going back a few centuries, our culture at that time was burning witches at the stake and trading in slaves. Its a little daft and very ethnocentric to judge the cultures of centuries ago on our modern ideals, morals, norms and standards.

    #1019313

Psttttt, don’t mention the British culture of imprisoning mentally ill children in police cells and warehousing mentally ill adults in prison. Which in three hundred years time will be considered as barbaric as burning witches at the stake.

    B-)
