Just had an interesting convo with my son who used to be a banksman until  recently (he was one of those blokes who direct those humongous cranes that build multi storey office blokes and offices from the ground in London).

He was telling me how during ramadan muslim crane operators get so dehydrated they make bad choices and put peoples lives in danger because of this.

Imagine being at the top of one of those cranes in a cab in this heat for 8 hours with no water !

He tried to reason with them and begged them to drink water for the sake of safety.  They refused to his frustration.  His dilemma was does he report them for being unsafe and risk someone being killed and them loosing their job because of their religion or does he walk away and do something else.

    He chose the latter.

    Right or wrong you choose.

I would have reported them without a second thought.  To risk other peoples lives because your religion tells you to fast is irresponsible and selfish.

Wrong choice, muslims (or any other religious group) should not be given special treatment.

Thank god you dont if you support people operating highly dangerous cranes close to passing out due to not being able to take  on adequate nutrition.

Held my banksman ticket for 17yrs and as worked as a piler its bang out of order in my book. But shit happens on site. Sometimes you turn a blind eye to health and safety to get the job done

Any worker, working for any company should be responsible for their own safety and those that work with them and those around them. The company should also be responsible for the safety of the workers and every one else effected by what they do. You’d have to report them on moral and safety grounds. If any thing happens and you never said any thing then you’d be just as accountable as them in my opinion.

Totally irresponsible situation and it should be dealt with. On a health and safety issue, not drinking for long amounts of time can cause dizziness and fainting at the very least. The company’s back is covered because it is obviously so dangerous for some one to be doing that job. If they refuse to drink water they should be taken off the job immediately.  Religious factors don’t come into it.

I was referring the general intolerance & negativity Drac appears to have.

It goes without saying that safety comes first & “special treatment” doesn’t come into question. Employers are legally obliged to take multi faith celebration into consideration so perhaps therefore he should of taken holiday over Ramadan & if that wasn’t possible moved to a job that was less dangerous.

Many of my Muslim clinical colleagues work the night shift over Ramadan.

We live in a multicultural society these day. Singling any one group out is called racism.  :-)
