50 years ago today The Beatles released their album “Sgt Peppers lonely hearts club band!
I remember this coming out.
I’d gone to grammar school, and as a result had become very isolated in the working-class street where I lived.
But when this came out, a lot of my friends finally came around to see me to show me the album. I wasn’t listening to pop music by that time, but one lad (now sadly dead) pressed it on me, telling me it was the best thing he’d heard.
I didn’t listen to it. I’d grown frozen in my isolation, a bit snobbish, snubbed him.
It was only four years later that I heard it for the first time, and I thought, yes, that’s good. Yes, i was a fool for not listening to my dear old friend.
Still wasn’t my favourite Beatles album, That was and remains Revolver, especially the song For No One, written especially for fools like me, fools like most of us.
