When i connect to the internet and i do not wish to sign onto msn messenger, i get signed into windows messenger automatically where i am not appearing offline. Its annoying as i dont want to be bothered. I cant seem to disable windows messenger from control panel.

    Any ideas? 8)

You cannot disable or delete Windows Messenger as it is a necessary part of the functionality of Windows XP (it runs the network communication services).

    1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
    2. In Group Policy, expand Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then expand Windows Messenger.
    3. Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run, and then click Enabled.
    4. Click OK.
    5. On the File menu, click Exit to quit the Group Policy snap-

Yes from wjhat I can see there is some confusion between MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger. Both initially look the same but the former is a user selected service (chat; e-mail etc etc) and the latter is a component part of Windows networking service.

If you do not network then I think it is OK to disable it but you run the risk of losing functionality, especially in Windows XP Pro. (I have a couple of PC’s networked together so for my particular configuration it is necessary). My instinct is to leave it well alone.
