The day before christmas eve, my mum, who’s 94 was the victim of a hit and run by one of these dreadful machines…………I know I know, it probably makes people smile to think a hit and run by a mobility scooter, what harm can they do……..well i’ll tell you….
On christmas day she had surgery to have a hip replacement, due to a broken one, a fractured knee repaired and a broken ankle repaired…..Not to mention several cuts and bruises to her face, back etc etc., Ok, you might say at 94, she’d be frail anyway,,,,,,,far from it,,,,,she is, or was at least, a pretty fit and active 94 year old. She also has one of these mobility scooters herself, to make things a little easier for her, but then she doesn’t go out, get pissed, and drive it around recklessly.
The local paper have been in the hospital to see her and are going to run a story on it, the paper comes out on Wednesday, i’ll post a link once it’s out.
In the meantime, I intend to find this person, iv’e made several enquiries and it’s only a matter of time before I do. Iv’e been told though, by the police, that there’s nothing they can do, as these things are not covered by the road traffic act, something which iv’e found out in recent days that even the DVLA are trying to do something about, at the moment, they’re untouchable. I do tho, intend to take out a civil suit, when I find him, and I will find him. The police told me, from the description, that he sounds like the same person they stopped last year, riding it down the middle of a very busy road, not in very good control as he was drunk as a skunk!! he was breathalysed, arrested released on police bail, CPS decided it wouldn’t be in the public interest to pursue it!!!! Obviously they couldn’t give me any further details in case it’s not the same person, fair enough.
Anyone who feels that these things should be made to be held accountable for their actions, please, please, please sign below……………….thankyou x

2 January, 2007 at 10:22 am #254780OK so this is a mobility scooter eh? It doesn’t look too dangerous from the piccy. How exactly did this accident happen?
I mean are we talking about some deranged Grandpa carreering down a pavement mowing down all before him or what?
2 January, 2007 at 12:06 pm #254781Correct me if im wrong….. but dont mobility scooters have a top speed of about 10mph…. :-k
2 January, 2007 at 12:17 pm #254782In fact Cas….. because this is quite a serious campaign you are asking us all at JC to help fight for you I have taken the time and trouble to research this and I cant find a mobility scooter that travels above 8mph.
Even the classy “Shoprider Deluxe”… (pictured below) with its all weather canopy and puncture proof tyres can only manage a top speed of 6.5mph…. weather conditions permitting of course.

Wow Fastcars, that is a cool machine!! I bet they cost a fortune to buy as well.
However, I agree with your point – before we throw the entire might and resources of JustChat behind this campaign to bring the reckless use of mobility scooters to an halt, we really do need to know a little bit more about the circumstances of this incident.
For example, the complaint referred to a ”hit and run”. At a top speed of some 6.5 mph, how on earth can that constitute ‘running’??? After all the vehicle can hardly be the sort of thing your average chav or ASBO boy would use and surely a kindly old Grandpa wouldn’t go racing down pavements with a bottle of whisky in his hand, mowing down innocent pedestrians???
2 January, 2007 at 1:29 pm #254784Well i dunno
Dangerous Grandpa`s Drunk and and riding a scooters its just Ilegal!!!!!!
He should have his Scooter revoked for mis use wouldnt u agree?
sorry this is sort of unbelievable however,
i do sort of see where your comming from
Old people shouldnt be allowed to have these if they go over 8mph and can run people down i mean whats the world comming to ???
still campaign and see what difference this makes i`ll glady sign something that is quite remarkable2 January, 2007 at 2:47 pm #254785well i’ll ave ye know they are dangerous! my hubby was once mown down by one in the music section of the public library!. she sorta reversed into him an gave him a deadleg!!. of course i found it utterly hilarious………and after watching the flustered librarian help him to his feet i did ask the lady in question to be more careful in future..a few inches to the left and it could ave been me she hit!. p.s.he did ave one helluva bruise on his leg the following day.
2 January, 2007 at 4:04 pm #254786Well, Geoff Adams-Spink – the BBC News website disability affairs correspondent is on the record as saying “Eight fatalities and a thousand injuries last year is not to be sneezed at.”
This begs the question – how many fatalities or injuries ARE to be sneezed at???
