I just think when we are getting the “respect the ref” campaign thrust down our throats not only in the premiership but also at grass roots (my sons team and all their league have all received newsletters publicising it) its a bit ironic that already a red card has been overturned as well as the matters pointed out in this thread and we are only a bit into the season!
Its a disgrace!
I agree with you shaz.
Referees will always earn respect by their decisions. There are good refs and bad refs.
The fact that we are having a “respect the ref” campaign says to me that the bad refs are making too many wrong decisions.I remember one particular incident in a game between Sheff Utd and Liverpool.
Steven Gerrard was awarded a penalty by the ref – not because he was fouled but because he thought a defender intended to foul him.A totally ridiculous decision.
It’s no wonder the poorer referees (and there are plenty of them) aren’t respected.Referees need to be more consistant with their decisions.
The referee at my son’s game today was excellent and I went and told him so after the game.21 September, 2008 at 10:16 pm #373681Shame the kid didn’t have a gun…

Can’t say I saw anything different today from any other game. Have to say, Peter is very correct. I think we believe refs always used to be better when the truth of the matter may well be that they never really changed, tv did.
Thats probably true. Of course the game used to be played at a slower pace, and although the refs are fitter now, I dare say the quality of their eyesight hasn’t improved that much. We can probably all agree that there was a lot more respect from players in the old days, grudging or otherwise, for the man in the middle.
Astounding amounts of money and media coverage make it a lot harder for refs to have the kind of good game when you hardly notice them, as almost everything becomes a talking point now. But Riley is poor.
Arsene Wenger has proposed two referees, operating in each half as in basketball. Given the increased speed and athleticism of the modern game that might be a better solution than goal-line judges.

I don’t totally agree with the points you make.
A lot of referees are conned by players to such an extent that it’s becoming farcical.Steve Bennett was made to look amateurish iby the antics of some Chelsea players n a Cup tie between Chelseas and Newcastle once.
Three times the Chelsea players dived to earn not only free kicks but cautions for the Newcastle players.
One Newcastle player was even sent off after Wright-Phillips made an outrageous dive.
Even John Terry had to question the cheating of his fellow team mate, Didier Drogba.

21 September, 2008 at 10:54 pm #373685So you need a board of professionals to review and if a player is seen cheating impose a ban on him but football cannot go down the video review by 4th official immediately after every incident or the matches will never end and players will scream for review everytime. Rugby style refereeing refs word is final

lmao, they are all having a good ol rant over there about the “hitting” incident…
I rewound it on skyplus and can confirm it was a small child, having a laugh, and he barely got a touch, hardly a “hardened football hooligan”
ya gotta laugh

yeah ok.
My old headmaster was a Football League referee in the 1970s.
His name was Gordon Hill and while we were at school the News of the World named him as the referee who was most respected by the players. He used to tell us some great stories.
He once called Billy Bremner to one side after a bad tackle and told him that the Leeds United poster in his son’s bedroom was being taken down that night. It shut Bremner up a treat.
Gill knew how to handle people and although he was prone to a few errors – he once disallowed a perfectly good Arsenal goal he earned respect.
And the players who respected him were the bad boys of those days.21 September, 2008 at 11:03 pm #373688They didnt earn respect they just didnt referee prima donnas who want a free kick cause their hair gel has been messed up and know Sky or Match of the Day will show 37 camera angles as slow as you like
