You rotten buggers !!!! Well it didn’t go BANG !!!
RAM upgtrade went to plan and the system in fairly whizzing along. Getting the four old RAM sticks out and the new ones in was a bit fiddly as I had to remove and re-install both hard drives. – due to space constraints. Once done, everything else was dead easy.
However, the system booted up much faster and MS Office 2007 loads a lot faster as well and now doesn’t ”hang” ….. so far.
I am also the proud possessor of a bagful of dust and fluff !!!

I thought you was replacing the RAM?……not extracting the contents of DOA’s skull

I think 2003 may be welcomed back?
I tried the same as you with 2007 and had the same experience, I was told my machine was not ‘up to speed’ bloody ‘propeller heads’ grrrrr,
Having sniffed around here at work and talked to a few bods in the back rooms I think 2007 has a long way to go before it becomes as useable as 2003.12 September, 2007 at 2:11 pm #287156In one sense I am inclined to agree with you Druid. 2007 certainly seems to run slower than 2003 and I am uncomfortable with the ”new” file format (i.e. adding an ”x” at the end). This is all very well if everybody has 2007 but as it is really new and only out of Beta a few months it is a bit much to expect everybody to have it.
I am currently saving all my files in the old 2003 format (i.e.—-> .doc NOT .docx etc etc) so when I send them on to clients etc they can easily open them without the need for a convertor.
That said, I do like the new look and feel of 2007 apps. The ”ribbon” is much easier to use and the whole feel of it is more intuitive and user friendly. 2003 took ages to learn in terms of discovering where everything was…. 2007 it is right there in tabbed form in front of you. Configuring the interface is also a lot easier in 2007 than ever it was in 2003.
BTW – having now thoroughly tested everything I can confirm that the RAM upgrade sure has done the trick. It all loads as fast as 2003 did and I can now multi-task without any ‘hanging’ problems….. thank Christ !!!

Now you can spent the next 3 days undoing all of the” good advice “Anita gave you.
29 September, 2007 at 10:02 pm #287158Irrelevant of the speed – doesn’t anyone else find the interface on Word/Excel 2007 just a pain in the butt??? And then why are other programs like Publisher have the normal 2003 interface/toolbars???
Isn’t it supposed to be designed to make life easier????
pah!
17 January, 2008 at 8:24 pm #287159Another point that a lot of people dont know is you cannot run XP on 4 gig of ram with some motherboards.
When upgrading to the dreaded dual core make sure your processor has a high L2 Cache.
Unfortunately a lot of people seem to be under the impression that dual core means you can run twice the amount of progs at once. This is only true if your putor is set up to run 64 bit which as we all know is that useless OS called Vista.
If you run XP the majority of your progs will be in 32 bit which is no good on dual core.
Dual core is for the future as is quad core.
Yes unfortunately i have dual core as i believed the hype and ended up with a slower PC.17 January, 2008 at 8:36 pm #287160@colkaz wrote:

At last! Someone that knows what they are talking about! XP and below do not support 4gb of RAM… it is a fallacy that it runs better with 4gb!
Well done colkaz, at least the old duffer went and spent good money on unneeded hardware though.
17 January, 2008 at 11:19 pm #287161Without getting too technical on motherboard design, basically this was a computer that was build about 3-4 years ago, with a an old chip set.
Not a new one.
With the old Pentium 3/4’s you could just up grade the ram to cover any running issues. This version of Office was written for the older computers like the P 3, it is an office program and most offices only change their computers once every 5-10 years.
There a simple reason your not happy with your new dual core computers, the programs that take full advantage of the this kind of chip set are not in the marker place yet.
It will take about a year for the new programs to come out and the web to catch up.
Most of us are putting off buying new computers for the next 6-12 months, the new dual core chip sets are rubbish, the only good one is the AMD chip set.
The quad cores chip sets are the ones we are all waiting for, they are better.
But the price is still too high and most of us are waiting for them to improve and drop in price.
We have seen this before when they launch the Pentium MMX+ chip set back in 1996, and 6 months later they then launch he Pentium 2 chip set.
When you’re buying a home computer always buy what you need now, not what you think you will need later.
