Yes I agree that the major cause of my system slow-down is Office 2007 gobbling up system resources – and upgrading the RAM ought to sort that out.
I am toying around with increasing the processor speed as a means to get the whole thing to run faster, in addition to any performance gains from the RAM upgrade.
Currently I have a Pentium 4, 2.99GHz dual channel processor with hyper threading capability running on an Asus P4P800 MotherBoard.
Any ideas how much faster I can reasonably get this to run by overclocking it???
11 September, 2007 at 10:37 pm #287144maybe thats why it works ok on mine, I have vista… though i have no idea how this is the case.. as vista uses more ram then xp… computers don’t half confuse me

Yeah, I haven’t figured that one out either. Anyway I’ll let Vista run until MS bring out at least SP1 (or even SP2) and fix all the bugs.
11 September, 2007 at 10:41 pm #287147people who talk about computers confuse me lol!!!
When I upgrade mine I need one of you lot to tell me which one to buy, so I know I will be getting my monies worth 8)

The only problem is it’s very fiddly as i know from personal experience, its just a case of having a play until you reach your highest point you can get the CPU to go while the system being stable still. If you use the wrong voltage multiplier settings you may get no response from your system what so ever, and for someone who would be doing it for the first time would freak them out and think they killed there system lol.
Rather than try and suggest which voltage multipliers to use and which settings for the RAM and FSB, which would be almost impossible for me to predict not having your system infront of me, it wouldnt do you any harm to have a look on some overclocking sites such as thisGeneral guide for overclocking intel cpu’s
http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/1567-intel-overclocking-guide.htmlOh 1 other thing, if you do manage to sucessfully overclock the system, i advise you to install a system monitor program (such a motherboard monitor)to keep and eye on the temperature of the processor and motherboard, as it will be higher due to the overclocking. If you should encounter a high temp, try a program called “cpuidle” it lowers the temp on average by about 10C.
Hope that helps.
12 September, 2007 at 8:48 am #287150Thanks for that. It pretty much confirms my own feeling that maybe overclocking is not for the faint hearted.
I think I’ll stick to the RAM upgrade right now and see what improvements that makes.
Starting to go for it in 10 mins ….. fingers crossed.
