Just wanted to share this with you. Mick is my Uncle and although now sadly afflicted with Alzheimers he was the first Irish man to ever win a British Title. Didn’t hold it for long … two factors .. 1 . he lost  and 2.before he could rematch he had a near fatal car accident.
He worked for Massey Ferguson til retirement age and was a great father and husband.
Now there is talk of placing a plaque on the house he was born in , in Spangle Hill, Cork. A lovely idea. But after being ripped off by his then manager G.Middleton… a few quid to help his wife care for him would have been nicer… or maybe the offer of a decent nursing home…. Anyway , didn’t write this to start a bullshyte debate on Alzheimers, boxing or any other thing the cretins might decide to comment about….
Just wanted you to know how proud we are of this Irish man ..and let Emma rant and rave about the fact that MY Irish Uncle fought for the Brits at least in one way  :!:  8)

sorry cant copy and paste the fecking thing… just youtube mick leahy if you wanna see… sugar ray would have hammered him a few years previous, a fact that mick admitted to happily.. but what a memory to have hey :?: :!:

The great Laszlo Papp – three time Olympic Champion – has just died at the age of 77.

Mick Leahy was the only man to take him to 15 rounds, and also the last person to beat Sugar Ray Robinson.

The man’s a legend, nice one red

Thanks for sharing that, he must still have some great memories despite his illness.

Cheers toy !!! I didn’t know that Mick had done that although I did know that Lazzlo Papp had just died .You sound like you know a bit about boxing yourself !? I have another snippet of information to stick in the old scrap book we’re putting together. All his boxing memorabilia was stolen by gypsys when they robbed my nan’s house years ago for the copper piping … winkers

Sadly shazza Mick doesn’t remember much anymore.. its heartbreaking. but what can you do…..we’re all dead proud of him xx thanks for both your comments much appreciated xxx

Well my boxing days were over at nineteen red. But when growing up me Dad had all the Rings, Boxing News’s, loadsa books + other magazines long gone now.

I’m named after a fighter as it happens.

So yeah I know about ya uncle Mick, Jackie Turpin, Wally Swift all them old boys…..
more to the point I’m in touch with peeps who know far more than me and the name of Mick Leahy will be very familiar to them.

I’ll see what I can dig up for your scrapbook and pm you ok hun ?
