I met him when I was 18, a few years after his brain haemorrhage. Standing in a queue at the works canteen, I suddenly became aware of this huuuuuuuuge man standing next to me. As I looked up (cricking my neck!) he looked down and with a cheeky smile said “alright?”. He came and sat with us and chatted for over an hour and was a lovely man, true gentleman and gentle giant. After he left one of the other women shook her head and said “he’s wasting away, he looks so small now”…sheesh if that was small I’d like to have seen him at his peak! I was late getting back from lunch but when I told my boss I’d had lunch with Merv the Swerve I was excused.
RIP Merv The Serve, a true gentleman xx
