16 August, 2013 at 2:14 pm #519326i will agree that *first time* is my favourite song but how about this
16 August, 2013 at 2:24 pm #519327As regards *the first time* i prefer this version…Roberta Flack takes it to a new level in my eyes
19 August, 2013 at 5:29 am #519328Brilliant thread!!!!!!!
I love the Johnny Cash version of first time. Like Nina Simone he was a great interpreter of songs and usually transformed them into something other. (For evidence, check out his version of Nine Inch Nail’s version of Hate).
I’m a great fan of Bjork and Ane Brun’s version of Joga is so heartfelt it gives you goosebumps

If anyone saw the brilliant On Top of the Lake on the Beeb recently, they would have noticed another haunting version of this song

And here’s another Ane Brun offering from a rather decent album of Scandinavian people having the gall to take on Leonard Cohen

and finally, hopefully this is a treat for Nick Drake fans, great songs deserve great voices:
19 August, 2013 at 5:41 am #51932921 August, 2013 at 12:54 pm #519330this song reminds me of when I was 20, and I thought an attractive woman was no more than a pretty face. The song has a haunting tune, great lyrics (not the usual ‘I love you I miss you wo-oh-oh- where’s my mum? lyrics). The singer is Nico, who ended up living with John Cooper Clark, the punk poet, and dying from a fall off a bicycle in Manchester. A lesson there somewhere.
21 August, 2013 at 2:08 pm #519331i know clarkie quite well
ive worked with him.21 August, 2013 at 2:21 pm #51933221 August, 2013 at 6:16 pm #519333Although I’m not the biggest velvet underground fan, or of Warhol for that matter, I’ve always been intrigued by Nico’s story since a watched a film about her life a good few years ago. I didn’t know that she lived with the Bard of Salford though, that fact seemed to have eluded me, so thanks for that.
On the very rare occasion when I plucked up the necessary wherewithal to introduce a coy and impressionable damsel to my music collection, I’d probably play These Days by Nico.

Other songs that I would play might include the following:
Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now

Shirley Horn – You Won’t Forget Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1HYbSFBYak
Gil Scott Heron – I’ll Take Care of You

If she’s still around and I’m sufficiently confident that she has been lulled into a false sense of security, I’d probably play some Fela Kuti, Gogol Bordello and New Order. And if she’s still around, I should be looking for a wedding ring…
… As you can obviously tell, I’m not particularly skilled in the art of sonic seduction.
