Hi peeps, have finally succumbed to the lure of this forum as Im at the end of me wotsit! I recently had to do a restore on pc and saved all of my music etc on an external hard drive…so far.. so good, when I came to put it all back on my pc I managed to get most of it back but on certain playlists and individual tracks im getting a message that says

Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

(Next to the problem track is a blue exclamation mark)

Can anyone help?? I may just be missing something obvious but would appreciate any advice.

    Thanks

Rather than trying to access the particular music track through Windows Media Player …. have you tried locating the file (for example in “My Documents” > “My Music”) then clicking on the file to open it?

If the file has been copied back onto your computer correctly, WM Player should open and play it and hopefully will add it to your playlist / library that is stored in WM Player’s own files.

Ive always had probs using WMP because my first choice is Itunes. But doing what PB said you should be able to right click the file and when it says “open with” you should be able to choose WMP.

I get really cross with Itunes because Ive uploaded my own music there, but have real trouble using WMP to get it back. Its a long and winding road (one of my faves…. did you see that there…???!!!) but you will get there

It is never wise to move music from one file to another once you have added it to media player. Purely and simply because media player cant then find the source when it wants to play the record (as it states in the warning you receive). If, as in your case, you find that you have to move your music then it is simply a case of reloading it all back to media player in the manner that PB has suggested. Only I wouldnt do it track for track. Its better to do the lot en bloc or it will take you forever.
