I’m with you on this Sharon. Every Macafee installation I’ve seen is tremendously restrictive and you have to disable it’s ”nanny” functions to be able to use the internet fully. For some reason Macafee isn’t really good at remembering programme specific settings.

By contrast Symantec (Norton) firewalls (there are several versions) not only totally stealths your computer so it cannot be ”seen” (i.e. doesn’t respond to being ‘pinged’) but they also block what they have been told is unauthorised incoming traffic. This guards against drive-by downloads, Trojans, worms and suchlike.

The big advantage is that you can scan your computer for internet enabled programmes – you’d be surprised how many there are and loads of then aren’t at all obvious – and you can set the level of internet access you want from ”blocked” to ”permitted” and ”always ask”. Once this is done it will remember the particular setting per programme and doesn’t constantly nag you with requests. Any new programmes are aways asked first time and the setting is then remembered.

As I say, I prefer Norton Symantec but I appreciate that there are loads of users who are equally enthusiastic about Macafee products.

I never got on very well with Norton, though my boy upstairs is running it, and it is okay.

When I was running it, it picked up a virus that I had to manually delete. I never had a printer, so had to write down all the instructions and do the whole thing manually, what a bl**dy job!

So, got rid of that and used that AVG thingy and that picked it up straight away and got rid of the nusiance.

Im only running the Mcafee as it came free with my new broadband subscription, but I do miss the good thing about Norton and that is what you said above, it remembers things and asks. A bit of a pain at times, but it was there nevertheless.
