There’s nothing like a good debate to get the posters posting and the more controversial the topic the more interesting the responses will be!

woohoo read the title carefully

Let’s not turn this into just another biatching thread please and actually have a sensible debate on sensible issues.

I’ll start the debate on the subject of Immigration

Are we too slack with immigration control? Should we have a points system as in other countries? Should immigrants be made to live in areas dictated to by our Government rather than just overpopulate the place they happen to land in ( as in other countries )? Should our Government bend over backwards to accomodate the immigrants cultures?

I think if there was ever a time to restrict immigration it’s now, for obvious reason I really don’t have to point out. However I don’t think it would come to the situation where we close the doors completely, even for a limited time, that wouldn’t fit in with the ethics of the country.
The idea that the government can stipulate which areas immigrants could live sounds like a good idea, but surely they would want to ship them off to less populated areas which usually means less work, therefore that would anger locals, that the immigrants are nicking their jobs.
The point system sounds like the best solution put forward, it works very well in many countries to my knowledge (no jokes pls  ), but we need to get the points system right. If it’s anything like our benefits system it will become another shambles to the already long list of “soft touches” this country loves to offer.

Not necessarily, if the system was based on a points system and profession being one of the biggest criteria. When my friend emmigrated to Australia they were restricted to live in one of 3 areas where their professions were in demand for a certain period of time.

It could help with overpopulating any one area and saturating all resources there.

that’s not what I was meaning by it, see my earlier response to kenty! I was meaning that they should be placed where there is a shortage and need of their professional skills !

Ghettos makes it sound like all immigrants are non professionals!!

Sorry Q i wasnt implying that u wanted to create ghettos just that i think that may be the result of planted areas ( so to speak). perhaps i find the whole immigrant debate hard to be impartial to, as the irish were , arguably, one of the greatest mass immigrant population.
