Chelsea might only have spent 25 mill this summer Geoff, but how much did they spend in the summers previously. Bet it was a fair wad, which is fair enough, but it sure as hell helps to a massive degree.
Dont wanna get into an argument about how big a club Chelsea are, but the fact is before the Ruski took over they were frequently top six-top ten, at about the same position City are in now.
2 September, 2008 at 9:37 pm #368809Been reading all about it from bitter scum utd, sousers and gooner fans all day on the BBC today. We’ve won in Europe, played in the Champions League (with consistent progression), won FA and League Cups before Abramovich took over the reigns. He added the League to our portfolio of the past 11 years. We have also spent LESS than Man Utd on buying players in the past decade.
What’s more Abramovich is no mug. He has spent some £500 million on buying the club and players since he came in. However the net assets of Chelsea are somewhere in the region of £750 million, this would include prime land, two hotels, etc. Chelsea have also sold in the region of £40 – 60 million from player sales, not to forget the money they make from marketing and an £80 million kit deal with Adidas.
If Abramovich were to sell he could expect to make a profit on his troubles. Not bad considering how non Chelsea supporters go on and on and on about his bank rolling us. We would have another benefactor if he had enough, we are now a world football brand. I think non Chelsea supporters kid themselves usually through some sense of jealousy for what the club has built up in the past 11 years, and of course to convince themselves we have bought the league, etc. At the end of the day if Virgin Atlantic could tread all over BA because they had net assets far exceeding their rivals, they would try, everyone wants to be a winner and the business of Football Club PLC is absolutely no different.
If people actually concentrated on the football instead of oozing with the green eyed monster they may actually concede that the football team is actually world class. Everyone strives for it, we are there, and of course we all want our team to be no.1 (as Chelsea are on the UEFA rankings). I’ve yet to see a convincing argument regarding money when the scum utd have consistently broken the British transfer record for nearly 50 years. And before you say their wealth is built on support, don’t forget that they are quite crippled by debt currently.
I wish someone could give me an argument that would even get me thinking, just seems it’s all whinging and whining from people that support losers!

looks like Chelsea put in a bid too it seems?
there is no argument, Chelsea are not a big team in terms of history, they are a big team in terms of money, which ever way you look at it, it does’nt really matter, unless you are a football player who wants to be part of a long history, or maybe just have an agent who encourages you to sign for the man with the biggest wallet
