A Pittsburgh conman was caught out in an ambitious scam – when he asked for change for a million dollar note.

The man presented the note at a supermarket and demanded change.

But the cashier at the Giant Eagle Store refused and alerted the manager, who confiscated the fake note.

At this point the would-be millionaire crook flew into a rage.

Police said he slammed an electronic funds-transfer machine into the counter and reached for a scanner gun.

The man, who was not carrying identification and has refused to give his name to authorities, was arrested and was being held at the Allegheny County Jail.

Since 1969, the $100 bill has been the largest note in circulation in the United States.

Police believe the $1m note seized at the supermarket may have originated at a Dallas-based ministry.

Last year, the ministry distributed thousands of religious pamphlets with a picture of President Grover Cleveland on a $1m bill as a publicity stunt.

The church, the Living Waters Ministry, ran into trouble when government agents investigated whether the advertising campaign was cover for a counterfeiting operation – to the bemusement of the religious group.

The notes themselves included the phrase “Not Legal Tender”.

Cleveland, who was first elected in 1885, is the only American President to have served two non-consecutive terms.

The Million Pound Note, a 1954 film based on a story by American writer Mark Twain, saw Gregory Peck as a man given the valuable note, but who soon finds it more trouble than it is worth.

Only a American would try this, classic!

Maybe they should have an annual award for the worlds stupidest person

And to give this one a run for his fake money there was a story a couple of weeks back about someone who was using fake blue lights installed into his radiator grill to pretend to be a doctor on call for getting through traffic jams

He had built on this ruse by filling the boot with medical equipment, having a doctor on call sign and creating a fake set of accounts which got him off speeding tickets several times

He came undone when he had already been let off of a speeding fine at a court hearing but THEN tried to get compensation for about a grand and a half for the cost of getting a locum to cover his imaginary surgery which he had faked a complete set of paper work for

A fake set of paperwork filled with spelling mistakes and totals that didnt add up correctly :|

Not sure whether the gaul of this geezer is more astonishing than his utter stupidity

There is one already. It’s called The Darwin Awards (named after Charles Darwin) which honours those imbeciles who assist the human gene pool by removing themselves from it in amazingly stupid ways.
