it wont load. I managed to get it started in safe mode and tried (and failed) to do a system restore, it just froze.
Where do I start, and what hope do we have of saving it?
He has a lot of coursework saved on there and has more to do through the summer and is understandably worried it may be lost.
Help!
Oh… and starting it in normal mode doesnt get anywhere, it gets to the black screen with the windows flag in the middle and the loading bar below it, and its at that stage it is freezing.
Doesnt sound good does it. :?
3 August, 2008 at 6:18 pm #359592Christ only knows what has been done to this poor PC …. but it sure sounds a bit horrendous.
IF you can start it in safe mode, you might try to run a virus scan (in Safe Mode) and see if your anti-virus software can pick up on anything (assuming that the virus definitions are up to date of course).
Alternatively, and again assuming that you CAN start it up in Safe Mode, you could try to copy all the “vital” files off onto a memory stick and then wipe the C: drive clean by doing a full re-install of Windows.
It would be helpful if you could post details of the Operating System, the hard disk size (C: drive) and how much RAM is installed and finally, what anti-virus software you have running.
3 August, 2008 at 6:24 pm #359593I think we can trace it all back to a change in what anti virus he was using. He deleted Norton and went to AVG in the week at some point, Im sure he did it properly, as he knows more than I do technically. Then he started having pop ups, and did something there and then bang, this happens.
I will try the virus scan, if i can get it to work, and see if I can find the system details.
I did notice he does have an option on his system called system recovery, what would that be and should I attempt it?

Okay. He is running Windows XP home edition, Celeron(R)CPU 40gb hard disk size, 2.80GHz 2.81GHz, 224MB of RAM (no idea what all that means).
AVG has started scanning in safe mode as a “command line” scan only, so it looks like it may take some time, but at least its not frozen, so may pick up on something.
Just asked him for more info…. he was deleting cookies he reckons, and I feel he may of deleted something vital through the add/delete program menu, as he was having a “clear out” following a scan.
3 August, 2008 at 8:27 pm #359595Well he has bugger it right up
Yet again AVG has fu c k up one more pc.
Right if your a teenage boy, you are going to look at p o r n and p o r n sites are full of virus.
Anyone looking at these kinds of site’s needs a real ant virus program, not a free one.
If you restore it, and its simple to do, it will take a while and there a “help” file to tell you how to do it.
But……….. I think you would be better off taking it down to a computer shop and getting them to fix it for about £50.
3 August, 2008 at 8:38 pm #359596well the scan is still running at the moment, so I will see what that generates.
I may consider formatting it and starting over if its really messed up.
He wouldnt dream of looking at those sites DOA, he’s a goody goody lol, his younger bro probably would though
3 August, 2008 at 11:37 pm #359597Ok, the virus scan showed zero threats, but it still froze when we tried a normal start-up.
Someone’s advised me about re-loading windows over the existing one which will save important files, but I need his registry key, and you need to get on line with that pc to get it.
Can I use any registry key, or will Bill Gates find out?!
4 August, 2008 at 6:08 am #359598When ever mine used to start in safe mode i just changed the display settings so the picture looked normal again.
4 August, 2008 at 10:14 am #359599try pressing the f8 key shaz.. and seeing if your able to get in with “last good configeration”
4 August, 2008 at 11:16 am #359600We tried that yesterday Rubes, the only load option that works is plain old safe mode.
Gonna have another play with it soon, see what happens.
