25 August, 2007 at 6:54 pm #284602According to the news, it seems as though the Greeks have had an identical situation to the one we narrowly escaped from in southern Italy.
I gather that some 40 people have been burnt to death in uncontrolled fires that have swept across the mainland. The thinly inhabited and uncultivated area seems to be exactly the same as for Italy.
Lots of the deaths were caused by people being trapped in their cars on the narrow winding hillside roads / tracks and burnt alive. It’s a pretty horrible way to go.

Not as glad as I am I can tell you. The poor sods in Greece are really going through it though and from my own experience I am sure that the Greek emergency services are as useless as the Italian ones.
Problem is that the areas concerned are really isolated and in the main are populated by elderly people who are just not able to act or react rapidly to this sort of danger. By the time they realise that an out of control fire is raging towards them, it is far too late to get out ….. which is why lots of them were burnt to death on the ‘roads’.
