I saw Lou Reed in early 74. It was a couple of years before punk, the music was a mixture of really easy listening and adolescent fantasy; he shocked people when he echoed the punch on a girlfriend’s face by hitting the microphone very hard so that the sound reverberated around the room (cold shock the response – look at the movie Repulsion), acting kinda psychotic. I thought he was one of the only human beings around at that time – everyone else was just an imitation..

The Velvet Underground songs are his height – no, Berlin was his height – a song cycle about hurting the one you love, losing her and your kids, surviving. Nobody has written anything like this in popular music, to my knowledge.

are you referring to the song caroline says skep
    quite chilling that song.

No, it was another song from the Berlin cycle.

And, yes, Caroline Says is very chilling. When I first heard that song. it was with a woman who was a victim of domestic violence. She’d not heard it before either, but the effect was to freeze her. She just said yeah, that’s how it is.

gosh i have not listened to Berlin in many many years..in fact I doubt I could now. and i bet i hear it again now Lou has died.. skipping past the carolines says and their taking her children away for downright jolly.. lady Day.

it was real..the producer got too involved in the album. He took his own kids, put them n a room, told them their mother had died, and then recorded the kids’ reaction.

Stupid b*stard, the kids must be still suffering from the trauma.

Never was easy listening – if you were really listening.

Called Kanye West’s last album a masterpiece, but called A Tribe Called Quest a Tribe Called Thieves for sampling A Walk On The Wild Side, and nearly destroying a band I loved in the process.

Was one of the first to use his art, namely Metal Music Machine, to get back at his record label. Setting a trend followed by Prince and Neil Young to name two more.

Cantakerous, recalcitrant and apparently a rather difficult man to interview.

He spoke a certain truth in his music and words. Which is more than can be said of many
