I am sorry but i still agree with what Sharons hubby did, when the receps have medicle training then they can say if a patient is ill enuf to see a doc or not…..
Never had that prob with my doc but it is a case of ok well can i book an appt with him next week JUST IN CASE.
I am sure the other patients wouldnt have clapped if they disagreed, and no one would blame a parent for getting loud, when emotion is running high where children are concerned i think most would say it is justified.
Actually emotion runs high when anyone in a family is ill really, my kids are all older but i would still get more than leary with that attitude ty, Doctors have to run out for emergencies but do you hear anyone complain when they are sat waiting for over an hour for their short alloted time.
Sharon i would give up waiting for your phone call hun….
sorry i do waffle :D
10 February, 2007 at 1:40 pm #259384i agree with shazza. a few months ago my grandson was ill. as the day progressed his breathing became more laboured. my daughter rang our surgery and was told by the recepionist….if u wanted to see a dr you should have rung b4 10am. my daughter patiently explained that at 10am he just had a temp and a mild cough.so gave him calpol. she was then told if she needed a dr that badly she would have to bring him to the surgery………..it was now 4pm cold and raining plus my daughter has 3 other children. she told the receptionist this………plus the fact the jake was now red in the face and literally fighting for breath……..and was basically told it wasnt the receptionist problem. so my daughter rang us in tears..her dad went and picked them up in the car. i will point out here that my hubby is like shazzas when confronted by jobsworths  he marched in with our grandson in his arms and told the receptionist he was taking im straight thro to the dr. which he did. the dr (who by the way is brilliant and knew nothing of the debacle with mrs hitler in reception)…..took one look at jake and phoned straight thro to the hospital telling them he was on his way and would need immediate treatment. anyway it turned out jake had pneumonia……he spent one night in our hospital and was then transferred to sheffield childrens hospital where he spent 5 days in the high dependency unit. my daughter was told if he hadnt recieved treatment when he did things could have been a lot worse. mrs hitler was obviously reprimanded by our gp in private as she apologised the next time i went in. some illnesses such as the one my grandson had.and meningitis………..can appear in hrs and end in tragedy. it doesnt matter what time of day or night it is……a dr is paid to see his patients and i was also informed by the hospital that they are legally obligated to visit a child at home under the age of 16.if they cant be taken to the surgery.

10 February, 2007 at 4:22 pm #259386I totally agree too Sharon with what your hubby did. It’s all very well having NHS Direct numbers given to you, and yes, they can give you advice, but they can’t give you anti-biotics, which your son clearly needed. I hope he’s feeling better too.
As some of you know, my mum’s in hospital. Last thursday nite she wansn’t too well. I didn’t worry too much, thought well she’s in the right place etc., But!! when I went in on Friday, just after lunch, you would have sworn she was suffering from altziemers!! she was babbling, not making any sense at all, crying, she was extremely hot. Between 1.45 and 3.15 i’d asked 3 times for a nurse to come and check her,,,,by the third time, I went along to the nurses station, she said i’ll be there in a minute, i said no, you’ll be there NOW!! RIGHT NOW!!! She came down and she called the doctor to the ward. The doctor, believe it or not, stabilised her by 8.30 that night! She had a UTI and a blood infection. She’s much better now, she spent a couple of days on a drip having IV anti biotics. The point tho, is that she’s actually IN hospital, it’s bloody scarey!!!
