Are you suggesting Christianity rips its practicants off for a few bob?
and / or, a fool and his money are easily parted?

No. I am suggesting the Catholic Church in the latter Middle Ages, that owned a third of Europe, provided the infra-structure necessary (canon law etc) for the growth of the forerunner of Capitalism and in turn, the expansion of the Catholic Church. A mutually beneficial economic relationship.

3 December, 2017 at 12:16 pm #1081434So – understand what and why someone has a different attitude to god and the universe. It’s a more adult approach; it’s also a more interesting approach.
Not really. Rather like the way you dismiss Dawkins, Grayling and the likes of Fry. Horses for courses. You’re entitled to your view, as is everyone else. Religion is black and white, there are no grey areas. Either God exists or he/she doesn’t and thus to date, there is no evidence he/she exists, or existed.
I don’t think religion is black and whit (anymore)…..lots of modern day believers adapt religion to their modern day life…..believing in religion does not mean you believe in god does it?…..the Sikh religion is based on gurus…who are not gods……im not greatly into the whole meaning myself….but I do not believe in A GOD as such….its very confusing to explain and its very confusing even for me to understand
Having faith also can mean getting strength from an unknown to help you through bad times…rough times….illnesses……personally if your religion is not hurting anyone then continue to take from it whatever it gives you

3 December, 2017 at 12:20 pm #1081437Agreed Kenty. I should have said God of course, rather than more broadly, religion. Of course I agree ‘religion’ can comfort and have said so.

Surely this can also be done without faith?

3 December, 2017 at 12:30 pm #1081452Thanks for your answer :)
the forerunner of Capitalism
May I ask exactly what that is?
My theory and it’s not something I have ever really thought about, would be the organization of long term capital investment and specialized labor and a move away from feudalism with the ‘rationalization’ of economics.

3 December, 2017 at 12:33 pm #1081457Gerry, the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages was one of the forces holding back the development of capitalism.
they believed that usury was wrong.
The Protestant work ethic seems to have been more conducive to capitalist development.
The Churches haven’t been behindhand in more recent centuries, mind you.
Apart from the Church of England’s billions of pounds of investment in in socially unethical but highly profitable companies revealed about a year ago (the Church says’ it’s dealing with it), there is the small question of goings-on at the Vatican Bank. they’re trying to deal with it, though.

In your opinion. Mine differs.
