Breast cancer surgeon Ian Paterson has been branded a “monster” by his patients as he was jailed for 15 years.
Paterson carried out unnecessary operations, including mastectomies, on hundreds of patients – possibly to boost his earnings.
Dozens of victims turned up at Nottingham Crown Court for the sentencing – where the judge told Paterson his arrogance left him feeling untouchable and added to his “complete lack of remorse”.
Judge Jeremy Baker said: “You deliberately played upon their worst fears, either by inventing or deliberately exaggerating the risk that they would develop cancer, and thereby gained their trust and confidence to consent to the surgical procedures which you carried out upon them.”

31 May, 2017 at 5:30 pm #1047971Reading the bit about the lipoma, and him wanting to remove it at all costs.
Lipomas rarely turn into cancer, but a small part could actually turn into liposarcomas, so maybe he was just staying on the safe side if it was larger than a 2/3 cms growth.
At this point they could also infiltrate muscle tissue.
Very controversial trial…and hard to establish who’s right or wrong, methinks.

This is somewhat of a controversial area but most soft tissue pathologists feel that a long-standing lipoma does have the capability to transform itself into a liposarcoma.
This was first described by Wolgemuth in 1910 and there have been a number of papers since that time describing this phenomenon. Dr. Steven Hadju, in Pathology of Soft Tissue Tumors, mentions ten cases of his that did this.

Those who are skeptical of this phenomenon, point out that there may have been sampling error in the original specimen ( the benign-looking portion of the liposarcoma was taken) or the pathologist simply misread the diagnosis. Also, some argue that a lipoma was actually a well differentiated liposarcoma all along and was just not aggressive.
However, there are a number of instances when a stable, long-standing lipoma (20 plus years) rapidly enlarged and on removal was determined to be a liposarcoma.
There is a type of lipomosarcoma termed a lipoma-like liposarcoma which can look clinically (when palpated or touched) and histologically like a benign lipoma. This underlines the reason many of us do not feel liposuction should be done on these tumors without a good sampling of their contents.
I would recommend removal on another ground. Sometimes, lipomas can become symptomatic as they encroach on nerves and muscles. Also, they can enlarge an become physiciall quite deforming.
31 May, 2017 at 6:16 pm #1047990Methinks it was all about money and the Insurance & NHS not wanting to pay for some of the procedures that the patients were undergoing, as they were expensive, and maybe, just maybe, this guy was looking out for the patients interest and well being ?
31 May, 2017 at 6:32 pm #1047999Also find it very odd he was jailed, as usually in cases like this the patients are compensated..and it ends there; it’s very, very rare the surgeon/doctor is prosecuted and jailed.
He was definitely costing the Insurance/Nhs too much money.
By jailing him , he’s possibly ended doing them futhermore financial damage.
31 May, 2017 at 9:36 pm #1048045The patients were compensated and a Jury convicted him. He funded his life style on the misery of many women. The only ones who arent paying out are the private sector, the Spire hospital. The thing thats going on here for those who cant quite grasp whats happened!! This wanker conned women into having unnecessary surgery by telling them they could die if they didnt! He is a butcher who played god with these women. This happened over a span of 14 years and i hope the others who worked with him will be getting asked some questions they must have known? how can they perform surgery on a woman to find shes got nothing wrong with her over and over again? He’s a present day Dr Mengele. a jury of six men and five women agreed with the prosecution that Paterson carried out “extensive, life-changing operations for no medically justifiable reason.
We dont need lecture on Lipoma’s Dr Bloss, amazing what google drags up.
A Channel 5 documentary about Paterson is due to air on May 31.

I don’t know enough about him or anything/everything he’s apparently done (and neither do you, I presume, besides what you know from the media…or am I wrong? ) to discuss this any further, as I’m not discussing something based on media coverage, but I’d have loved to be part of that jury….or even been his defendant.
