Can anyone remember when we had a good government? I can’t and I’m 54.

We are still living with the adverse effects of some of the policies of the Thatcher government and even the Wilson government. For instance, in Thatcher’s case, the abandonment of manufacturing industry in favour of service industry and the bad behaviour of some of the privatised utilities. In the case of the Wilson government, the long shadow of a culture of continuous public sector empire-building is still cast over us.

The thing is, government is to do with solving problems. They can never please everyone and as time goes by there more and more people become displeased with any particular government.

    I agree one hundred percent.

As for Britain’s Labour government’s “legacy” as it were, and in particular Mr. Blair? Well, as a “foreigner”, I can only say that peace on the island of Ireland could never have been brokered without him.
Granted, I can’t say I’m too enamoured with a great deal of Labour’s broader policies (in particular with regard to foreign affairs), but his crucial role in the Northern Irish issue was and is indisputable.. and one that he should be quite rightly praised and remembered for.

Pepper I want to say that I agree with u 100%! I thnk Blair was the best labour PM ever and I hated the image of him that was supposedly “americas poodle”. How can we , who do not know the extent of government responsibilities, understand what made himfeel that he had to go along with American Policies? Was Thatcher referred to as Reagans Poodle? Without Tony Blair we would not have peace now in the country that is my home and the idiots on both sides would still be tying us all in knots. I believe that Gordon Brown is doing the best he can in a very bad political climate and God help us all if the Tories get back into power.

Would any of us manage to run the country any differently… we all want to pay less tax but have a better health service better roads better everything. Which government has actually delivered on election promises once elected. Maybe it just goes with the job

i recall previous topics , seam to remember u slating conservatives and thatcher , so was the pit closures inevitable anyway , even under labour , if so why blame thatcher , not that i support tories btw coz i dnt , just makin a point

My complaint there was the lies by the conservatives, whilst all the while preparing for and indeed making sure there was a strike. For the purely monetary considerations and not community. And for the fact that we’re gonna have a lot more nuclear power stations despite 300 yrs supply of coal under this country.

The Conservatives were in too long, and Labour has now been in too long. This country has suffered as a result of complacency. We need swiftly changing political climates with people striving to achieve the best results, and for that we need a change of government every election.

If you leave them there for too long…………………………..they go to hell in a handbasket.
