. . . i watched the dispatches programmes last nght about britain and the street wars and guns and knives etc . . . . . and they all without exeption said they wil rob and steal and tax . . . . .
all except the ones who said they used to do such things, and gave clear explanations as to the reasons, and why they stopped; others looked at the knive amnesties and quite rightly mocked them;
I saw more kids in the programme go for the throat about the issue of absent fathers, or the problem of single mothers who were still at work when they came home from school; another targeted the 10-14 year old age group as the key age for authorities to give some education to, and why that was so.
One more stated his ambition of joining the police force, because of his life experience on the steets. And another mentioned that showing kids photographs of knife-wounds could be a real help in understanding the dangers.
anyway, I was watching the one on channel four . . . . .
3 July, 2008 at 4:50 pm #351246There has never been a time when knife crimes and violence hasn’t been around. It may be more prevalent now, but the world seems to be a much more violent and aggressive place than in the post war years, this might just be because it wasn’t given media coverage in the same way.
Take things back a 100 years or more though, and not much has changed. Maybe having 2 world wars last century just thinned the ranks of the young and bored.

3 July, 2008 at 7:05 pm #351252Call me old fashioned but society started to go tit’s up when the local bobbies disappeared off our streets and the so called do gooders decided that it was wrong to give a kid a clip round the ear.
When I was a kid the 2 biggest fears to me were a the local bobby pitching up at the door to tell me dad that I’d been caught scrumping apples from the old dear down the road …. the shame of it ……. not only did the whole street know but, I got a clip off my much loved & respected dad! Mum god bless her was often heard ranting those immortal words…… Wait til your father gets home!!!! :roll:
How times have changed kids don’t have a scrap like they did in my day … knives are pulled & sadly lives are unnecessarily lost.
How are we supposed to teach our children right from wrong? The “old fashioned” beliefs that I grew up have been pushed aside giving way to the usual response from most kids is I’ll report you to the police & guess what ….. we as parents run the risk of being charged with assulting a minor !
I had a clip or 2 upside the ear in my time & it never did me any harm –
Believe it or not I am in the 35-45 age group so I am not that prehistoric am I?
This is just my views & undoubtably a few will disagree but take the police off the streets & parental control away & you end up with the society we now live in.
