On wednesday, an Orca called Tilikum killed his trainer at Sea World in florida after grabbing her off the side and pulling her into the water by her waist. He was seen thrashing her about and apparently the whale had to be lured into a small tank and hoisted into the air in order for officials to get her out of his mouth. The post mortem has said she died of trauma injuries rather than drowning..
Apparently this whale has been involved in 2 other human deaths too…People are now calling for this animal to be euthanised, others want it to be released back into the ocean after 30 years in captivity….
I wondered what everyones opinions were?
26 February, 2010 at 2:50 pm #434655Would it survive being released back into the ocean, it’s been in captivity for 30 years, would it know how to survive on it’s own. I think it should be eutheanised, not because it’s done anything wrong, it hasn’t!! I think it would be cruel though to return it to an enviroment it clearly wouldn’t know, it would quite possibly die anyway.
I watched a TV programme this morning where they discussed this, one of the presenters said the clue was in the name of the creature,,,,it’s a ”KILLER” Whale!
26 February, 2010 at 2:54 pm #434656I don’t think it should be euthanised for simply following its natural instincts when man is cruel enough to keep it in such an unnatural environment.
If the “experts” believe that these beautiful creatures currently kept in captivity could survive in the wild, then I feel they should be released.
If it’s felt they couldn’t survive in the wild then make their environment larger and as natural as possible, stop making them perform, and let them live out their days…but of course there’d be no financial gain in that, so it’s never going to happen.

The only reason I thought it should be euthanised is that I don’t think it’d survive on it’s own, it’d be a completely un-natural environment to what it’s known.I agree that these owners could make it a natural existence for them, but as you say jen jen, it’s never going to happen……..

Its been happening for years :o
26 February, 2010 at 3:58 pm #434659I know years ago they did sucessfully return an orca to the wild… it was the one the movie ‘free willy’ was based upon, but then it begs the question what about all the others held in tiny little tanks? PETA has called for the release of all captive whales. Considering that these mammals roam for hundred of miles in the ocean and have high intellect then it is little wonder that one day it thinks.. ‘ya know am pissed off with being in this tank’ and turns on the hand that feeds it. It doesn’t even get a chance to practise its natural instincts.
26 February, 2010 at 5:49 pm #434660Dolphins have a highly social structure and often “play” rough, to another dolphin this play is probably nothing to a human it’s deadly. Perhaps it was simply a heirachy thing or maybe even sexual, after all this animal has been in captivity.
Should it be euthanised ? No.. no way26 February, 2010 at 6:20 pm #434661It shouldn`t be euthanised, and I disagree with keeping these incredible creatures in captivity, if it could be released with a good chance of success I think it should be released.
26 February, 2010 at 7:19 pm #434662There was some women in chat today baying for this poor whales blood, we had a disagreement but then she just got personally rude and abusive so she lost the arguement from that point really… but anyway…. taking the women from the side and into the water and thrashing her about sounds alot like when killer whales beach themselves and do the same to seals, i wonder if it was a split second wild instinct thing ?or indeed it was playing and just got out of hand im not sure, But i agree it must be frustrated as hell stuck in captivity, although asking them to perform, to a degree, most of what they do in the shows are merely what they do naturally in the wild and they use this to put on a performance. … I watched this last night and you can actually see many things they do in the shows being done out of choice in the wild a killer whale called luna so i dont have a major problem with the act itself just the fact it is in captivity. The documentary is brilliant btw if u have a spare hour watch it but u may need a hanky, but it really gives you food for thought and makes you realise these creatures are alot more than some people realise and alot more than probably any of us will ever know.
I wonder if there is anyway they can perhaps have a breeding programme or retirement bay/ large section of sea where they can perhaps use these animals that maybe cant survive in the wild now and slowly try and teach them or make a new pod maybe to release in years to come with ex captive whales and maybe use them for scientist to study in a more natural environment with the aim to eventually being able to release them or atleast giving them some kind of freedom even if not totally free. Would be a crying shame to have this whale euthanised, it is us that has put it in that environment and made a wild animal captive not the whales fault, i just pray that public pressure from some idiots like the women in chat today dont get this animal killed and what i would like to know is, if this animal has infact killed 2 other people what the hell were they doing using it still ???26 February, 2010 at 7:41 pm #434663Sorry for lowering the tone but ……
is it just me or does the name of the Whale sound rude?
