 After joining the Army as a boy my father rose through the ranks was offered a commission and retired at the age of 55 as a Major M.B.E.
During his service he had many postings, India, Egypt, Malaya, Kenya and Nepal being just a few of them.
Within the last couple of years my Father unfortunately was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
His mental health rapidly declined after the initial diagnosis and the only drug he has ever been given is for agitation, nothing to relieve the symptoms of this devastating illness.
Alzheimer’s drugs for early and late stage patients having been deemed too expensive at a cost of £2.50 a day by NICE (National Institute for Clinical excellence) and not cost effective.
He has to live in a care home which is in Gillingham Kent with 24/7 care which costs him nearly £1000 pounds a month out of his army pension, many people have to sell their homes to pay for their care.
Someone who has contributed so much to his or her country should not be kicked in the teeth by this government in their old age.
Because of my Fathers predicament I have become a supporter of the Alzheimer’s society, who are challenging the NICE decision in the High Court.
I have set up an epetition on the Prime Ministers website and would be very grateful for any support the link isbelow23 February, 2007 at 7:27 pm #262086Very nicely asked capybara. I will most certainly sign this petition and I hope that loads of our members follow suit.

25 February, 2007 at 2:58 pm #262091Signed too Capy and I agree with you too, it’s disgraceful that this drug isn’t widely available to those pple in genuine need, like your dad.
If your a heroin addict your given drugs to help wean you off, which cost a damned sight more than a mere £2.50 a day!
25 February, 2007 at 6:23 pm #262092I`ve signed,i think it`s terrible that the drug is not widely available.

Just a point, and perhaps insensitive to make it here,- I’ve quoted part of capy’s post above- not sure what the relevance was regarding his armed service- the piece Ive quoted is just as powerful an indictment.
Surely if the drug is for all, then the fact the father has Alzheimers is all the qualification needed- I signed because of the way your father has been treated by NICE
Or perhaps Im being difficult
28 February, 2007 at 6:17 am #262094I’m not signing – And I’ll tell you why.
PETITIONS DON’T WORK. They don’t even reach the government. They get chucked in the bin. Do you really think the government give a toss?
The only way to get things done is to over-throw the evil communist government that is oppressing us! The Conservatives in power would cure this disease, nevermind look after everyone who has it, for free!
But hey. I bet the same people signing this petition are the same people who voted for this evil government, so this user’s dad has the people who signed the petition to thank for getting his illness in the first place.
You bunch of hypocritical, evil monsters! Impale yourselves with a rusty bayonette, you deserve it!
