As was said earlier this would have been due to the advice of her Solictor.

A Police Force who had fed outrageous lies to the Press in a smear campaign, and who blatently lied about the amount of “evidence” they had to try to force a confession, and you two would have happy to answer their questions? Then you’re a pair of fools.

The only victims in this are the missing child and the children left behind. Consider how they will react when they realise they might have been taken when they discover that Mum and Dad went off and left them alone. They will find out the truth eventually whether or not Madeleine gets found. Kate and Gerry had better hope that those two children don’t lay the blame squarely on their shoulders.
