But pepsi, if those definitions are accurate, then by my reading it’s possible, to be the target of racist abuse and also to be racist yourself.

    Only possible mind. . . .

Thank you Terry, I hope everyone else got the joke . . . it was a joke, right?

    Wordsworth you amaze me.

I was expecting a lengthy reply from you – at least 3,000 words and which would’ve outlined the history of slavery and the oppression of one race that suffered at the hands of another.
In other words, the usual taxi drive from Manchester to London, calling in at Edinburgh and Norwich to take in the scenery.
It’s quite a relief (for me, at least..) that you’ve decided not to get your history books out on this occasion and that you’ve managed to steer clear of the pulpit and the sermon we’re so used to having to read.
If only you could temper that politically correct side of your personality, leaving it to one side and then try to tap into your own reserves of common sense. It would make for far interesting reading than the usual diatribe you deliver.

Woo! Hoo! I amaze, therefore I am amazing!

Terry, if you really want to tempt me off the scenic route, then you need to do more to make the direct route attractive. It doesn’t seem worth the time saved to be quite so misanthropic.

I’m pleased to see your recognition of the history to this. Much of it is relatively recent, so the stuff you mentioned is as worth remembering and relevant as anything else that relates to events of the last 200 years.

Political Correctness as a personality trait? Can you really change your personality just like that? Why do you want me to change? Are you sure you’d like the new me any better than the current one? Why do I have to be interesting? It’s tough enough editing down to 3,000 words without finding new jokes!!!

But if more interesting is what you want, I will if you will.

Anyway, nice to know my 3,000 word sermons were such compulsive reading. Or did you really not ‘have to’ read them? Tell the truth, you wanted to read ’em – you like ’em don’t cha! Gwaan, say it . . . . . !

    Definition of DIATRIBE
    1: archaic : a prolonged discourse
2: a bitter and abusive speech or piece of writing
    3: ironic or satirical criticism

I do try to avoid any hint of number two (geddit!) so can I have number 3 please Terry or were you being archaic?

I am white (well, a strange kind of olivey cream colour actually but you know what I mean!) and, like Terry, I have been the victim of racial abuse. It wasn’t pleasant to be on the receiving end and, had it been a crime back then, I would have reported it.

Racial abuse is not exclusive to one race, we can all be affected by it regardless of colour. It will never be eliminated completely (in my opinion) but it should be tackled at every opportunity. If footballers, who are revered and emulated by so many people young and old, are allowed to indulge in such abuse and not be reprimanded, then why should anyone else be? It needs to be challenged from the top and also at the grass roots level.

    “It’s football”…is it? Why?
Goading and taunting may be an unpleasant aspect of football but there comes a point when a line is crossed and it becomes unacceptable and must be challenged. Whether that line is a racial line, a sexual line (i.e. homophobic abuse) etc is not important, what is important is that a line has been crossed and it should be challenged.

This post is entirely based on earlier comments about John Terry admitting using the language quoted earlier on this thread.

Assuming that is the case, when you get paid a huge amount of money and are expected to be a role model, you should know that coming out with a diatribe that mixes pointing out the colour of someone’s skin and using a Germanic based swear word, will only cause trouble. If someone says I am Scottish they are telling the truth. When someone calls me a f**king Scottish **** (pick how many stars) they are being offensive. There is a difference.

In other words, no matter who has ever been accused of found guilty of anything, Terry

represented his country as England captain

      has played football for years

is experienced enough (but obviously not wise enough) to control himself, and

      earns a flaming packet.

Surely the least he could do is show a tiny amount of restraint. Given that he didn’t, he can expect to have to deal with the consequences – especially because of the fact that he is a public figure and a sporting hero. However unfair, that is exactly how the law works. You can get away with certain things in private or if you are a nobody, but not in his position.

As for the “racist abuse has happened to me, my family or somebody I knew” argument; I don’t doubt that for one second. Racist abuse is always wrong – people have loads of prejudices but they are required to keep some of them to themselves in public places, and the workplace.

Just because someone is punched in the face and nobody gets prosecuted doesn’t mean that anyone who is prosecuted should have our sympathies. Sometimes you get caught doing 85mph, sometimes you don’t. It’s still your responsibility whether you are caught or not.

It’s not the worst case of racial abuse anyone has seen, but, on the face of it, if he said what people have reported, it seems hard to defend.

oooooooooooo Wordsy, strong words! I will just let you know that I worked in an office with 6 black women who wouldn’t talk to me…………..it wasn’t until I said F U C K when I dropped a pen or something 4 weeks into the job that they decided I was ok. Just thought I would point that out ie. typing what I have, and lived in London for years! I am still not racist, and two of them are still good friends of mine!

    so ner!

    #502005

How do you know that skin colour had anything to do with it? Maybe there were other reasons? Did they think someone else, a friend maybe, should have got the job for instance?

I remember, many years ago, a guy joining our office. He was truly obnoxious and rubbed everyone up the wrong way from the off with the result that hardly anyone talked to him unless they had to and he never got invited for an after-work drink. It obviously got to him then one day he exploded “why won’t any of you ignorant b@stards talk to me? It’s because I’m Asian isn’t it? isn’t it? come on admit it!”
The office went quiet and then a voice piped up “no, it’s because you’re an obnoxious little prick.” The guy who said it was our blind audio typist who didn’t know that he was Asian…

Of course it’s offensive, but would it result in a court case..?

I like how you’ve used the word “when” instead of “if”. That made me smile.
