“In addition it seems The Wright Stuff on Channel 5 will be discussing whether Savile’s family should apologise to victims – I presume for some of their comments, I can’t see how they can owe any apology for what Savile did.”

No, they shouldn’t. I think they have done enough by removing his headstone – that says what they feel, loudly, in my opinion.

It’s all about finding someone living to fry cos we can’t hang Savile.

The circus has now started properly. Savile now looks like the greatest abuser in our history, as hundreds come forward, and the media think up more and more bizarre ways to keep the story at shock/horror level. Should his family apologise? Should the management of the BBC resign? Did Savile shoot JFK, and what was his role in 9/11? I want these questions answered.

And with the circus, the feeding fenzy. Law suits are prepared to launch at the BBC and every other institution which Savile was associated with. Investigation after investigation – most of them aimed at finding someone (or several someone’s) to blame.

The BBC are doing two investigations. The first is the sensible one into the culture of the organisation, how this could have been missed, and how it can be prevented. The second is into the editorial decision not to show the short piece about Savile a couple of years ago. The second on is only designed to find someone to sack, and if the BBC don’t, the media will do it for them.

What will cure everything for the victims. Perhaps money, people losing their livelihoods and the search to make someone accountable will make the nightmare seem bearable?

Let’s put the victims first and listen to them rather than running round finding a witch to burn. We all know whose to blame – a sophisticated bully and abuser, Jimmy Savile. Let’s put the victims’ stories and their finding a way to come to terms with this at the centre of our attentions.

And we’ve all looked away at moments when other people have been mistreated, even if we haven’t joined in. How are we going to make sure that the attitudes we have towards celebrity and power don’t inadvertently put our children and their children at risk in the future?

As the whole Savile affair, its reporting and how it is managed becomes more and more like a blood lust, how do we do the right thing by the victims and children in the future?

Read this thread with interest….. think its pretty clear from news reports that he was a dirty old git that abused his position. Saying that, he’s dead and can’t be held accountable… however the people that “enabled” his behaviour can. I don’t believe however that anyone should make money out of this.

    Just my opinion

I don’t think Kenty will agree with you.

    But harsh nevertheless?

Referring to the Wright Stuff program….yes I agree the family have nothing to apologise for….maybe they want to say they are sorry for the hurt that’s been caused to the hundreds of victims by someone who was in their family…a humanitarian kind of apology….when was or is the program due to air?

I thought the family denied the allegations and took down the headstones because they were attracting vandalism?

That’s what the Mail online seemed to be saying

I was led to the existence of this evil little filth-site (Mail online) by chasing up dave lee travis to find out where cosy appeared. I read two or three pieces from links and felt a bit sick inside. What rank English hypocrisy the Mail exudes – salacious details to denounce vice (an old News of the World speciality), all smear and gulit-by-association, use of photographs in a suggestive way to persuade. It did remind me of the Mail’s sister French fascist filth-mags of the 1930s – Je suis partout and Gringoire, which specialised in building up hate campaigns against their political opponents through allegation. Ugh!

Rothermere, the nasty who owned the Mail, was a notorious sympathiser with Hitler then, and saw the British Fascist Sir Oswald Mosley as the strong-man fuhrer who would lead Britain out of the slump and moral degradation of the time.

Now the enemy is the permissive counter-culture of the 60s. so that John peel is one of the big targets – unlike Savile, Peel really did represent that culture, wiht his liking for punk and his contempt for the Establishment. I don’t give him long. Peel is dead isn’t he?

p.s. I note that the boss at Broadmoor has said that it was impossible for Jim to assault a lad there as nobody is allowed near any of the characters there alone, though it certainly remains an allegation to be investigated.

I read the family had the gravestone removed out of respect for people who use the cemetery…dunno
