Well, looks like the Carr is reversing.

He’s ashamed apparently, according to BBC website. Ashamed or just pissed off with being caught out?

Just because people do well financially and can afford swanky accountants is not a justification for them paying less tax. I understand Jimmy Carr has apologised for his poor judgement in using the K2 tax avoidance he was offered… to be honest I dont think he should feel he had to do that.

The apology should be from the civil servants who were aware of the K2 tax avoidance and did nothing to bring it into line.

Its not acceptable for high earners to think they are justified in looking for ways to pay less tax… its ended up that poor people pay more tax in percentage terms than millionaires…. that cant be right

I was unaware poor people paid a substantial amout of tax Mrs T….there are probably more people claiming benefits they are not entitled to…. dodging paying their own tax through decent work that is tilting the country into debt….than a few millionaires having the balls to do what Jimmy Carr did and was advised………and because of what he did not being illegal I hope he takes whoever exposed him to court!

Maybe I should have said poorer people kenty….. I know there is an underclass of people caught in a poverty trap in this country some (a few) as you have said willingly so …. but the vast majority do work and pay their taxes…. Im one of them as are the whole of my family.

If we all took the K2 option you could say goodbye to free education national health and all the other things we take for granted.

Words I understand that laws have to be passed to change the taxation rules but its Civil Servants who make recommendations do the research and advise Ministers. If it is that Ministers have a vested interest in keeping the status quo well that should be exposed too….

Hmmmmm let me see…if someone said to me I can dramatically reduce your tax bill and it’s perfectly legal, would I say “no no, I couldn’t possibly, I need to pay as much tax as I can to help this country back on its feet” or would I say “tell me more”?

    What would you say?

It’s easy to sit here in judgement and say “how immoral” when it’s someone in the public eye who would appear to be wealthy taking steps to reduce their tax bill but can you honestly say that if someone gave you legal ways to reduce your tax bill you wouldn’t take them?

    #499448

I’d take it jen… we all would. That’s why I said I dont think Jimmy Carr should feel the need to apologise…. it does not make it right though….. and as I said the real villains in this are the officials who knew it was happening and didnt take steps to put it right.

David Cameron’s moralising and taking the high ground isn’t helpful either…. he should hang his head in shame that he presides over a government that allows it to happen.

But it has always happened and it always will…if not this loophole, another. There will always be (legal) loopholes to be exploited, they will never all be closed down and people will always seek out ways to avoid paying any more tax than they absolutely have to and not always legally…the black economy thrives in tough times.

I do hope that Mr Cameron’s affairs are squeaky clean though, and the affairs of his cabinet…methinks there are going to be a lot of people snooping around. If you get on a high horse, you must be prepared for people to try to knock you off.

Yes I agree…. Words has already said that Civil Servants had made Ministers aware it was happening and it had fallen on deaf ears…. maybe we will find out why :D

As far as loopholes are concerned I agree it has always happened but just to ignore them is dangerous… Yes closing them will only open another hole somewhere but that makes it more difficult to fiddle the system.

Better to ensure the system is properly managed and updated…. at the very least it will make the swanky accountants work harder for their money.
