Build yourself a bunker rubs.
7 October, 2006 at 1:34 am #243541Jack Straw’s just being an arse as usual. There’s absolutely no reason why you need to see a constituent’s whole face in order to be able to communicate with them. Imagine if someone had just had surgery, would he say to them, “Excuse me! Could you take off your bandages please? I can’t see your face.” And what does he do with the letters he receives? Does he say, “Sorry! I can’t possibly do anything until I see you face to face”
It’s staggering that a former foreign secretary could say something so idiotic. When he went to Iran did he tell the women to take off their veils before he spoke to them? I think not, so what’s the problem in his constituency? His opinion wasn’t something you associate with Labour and you have to wonder how Labour voters will react to his intolerance.

7 October, 2006 at 11:23 am #243543a bus driver in liverpool asked a muslim woman to lift her veil so he could compare her face with the one on the buss pass she handed him. she refused.he made her pay her fare. he was later reprimanded for doing his job. go figure.
7 October, 2006 at 8:53 pm #243544It’s an issue of religious freedom. This country has had a long history of religious intolerance, so the last thing we need is the state telling people what aspects of their religion they should be able to carry out.
As for the bus-pass issue I don’t think it’s important unless you’re getting loads of people wearing full veils. If you only get one person like that then you might as well not trouble yourself over it. I would just let them on rather than being pedantic. The only time when you should insist about seeing their face should be when you’re checking their passport or something important like that.

it’s not an issue of religious freedom at all – it’s as Ruby pointed out – when in Rome !!
What are they hiding behind their veils ???
If a drive has to verify a us pass by seeing the face then so he must – there’s no excuse – he should have kicked her off the bus
Anyone who want to use veils etc as an excuse to not abide by the laws of this country , then they should pop over to a country where they can wear them to their life’s content – and bloody stop over there !!!8 October, 2006 at 12:11 pm #243547@drivel wrote:

8 October, 2006 at 12:36 pm #243548All this thing about ‘when in Rome etc… How many have visited a muslim country with a gorgous beech or hotel pool and laid around in a bikini or had the odd cocktail?
All this fuss about a bit of material! Are we going to make all jewish men remove their kipper ( or whatever that funny hat thing many wear is called? made hasidic jews remove their curly bits (the long bits of hair behind their ears), religious jewish women no longer allowed to wear headscarfs or wigs – white people of a different religion who can trace their families back for many generations in this country. Also, are we going to ban the wearing of eastern style clothing? etc.
It just seems a bit petty. A few years ago it was single parents who were to blame for everything, now this. Whose going to be next? I vote for blinkered, xenophobic BNP supporters & chavs myself! I think they are far more dangerous to this country economically and its way of life than a muslim woman trying to get a bus.

One’s religious freedom, is another’s troden toe.
Freedom should be a common law, multiculturalism is not so.As for the bus-pass issue I don’t think it’s important unless you’re getting loads of people wearing full veils. If you only get one person like that then you might as well not trouble yourself over it. I would just let them on
