Ypu posted photos of an estate near The Favourite, and I’ve been meaning to ask you abot that. I’ll post when I have time.

    Fire away, whenever you’re ready.

But many thanks for what’s becoming a fascinating thread

Thanks, it would be nice with postings on other parts of London, we’ve barely gotten out of Islington so far.

The Good Old Days !! Hornsey-Rise-London-1975 11140294_1584927401789918_5014177209737784917_n 4 I do love the old red brick tenement buildings. We find them all over the country. These were very close to The Favourite in Hornsey Rise, and they were demolished in 1981. I suppose I’m glad I don’t live here or somewhere like this anymore, but you can’t beat the sense of community spirit in places like this. Hundreds of kids running wild, hand me downs, bikes and go karts put together from salvaged scraps and old pram wheels, everybody in and out each other flats, everyone looking out for each other, no need to lock your doors or windows, playing football in the courtyards til long after dark, poor but happy :)

Now, Alfie, a question. I lived just by The Favourite, moving there in 1979, and I don’t remember this estate.

I remember estates where Dresden Road met Hazelville road, and there was a road parallel to Hazelville, and there was a modern block of estates – Shelbourne House, I remember. These names are all from memory.

But I cannot remember the estate pictured above. you say it was demolished in 1981, and I should remember it as the arch is very distinctive.

Also, I used to go the Rainbow. I think I went just before it closed to watch Graham Parker, if you’ve heard of him. I also think I saw Dr Feelgood there, a favourite band of mine, first seen in Bristol back in 75-76.

Kenwood House (see alfie’s post above)  was a must for a snack during walks on the heath. When i last went there, it had gone downhill – expensive, and not very pleasant café

I loved London,i went there one summer for a few days holiday.Loved walking through the streets’evryone was smiling,i saw no trouble.I didn’t notice if there was anyone dirty, but then I wasn’t looking for that.I was too busy looking at the sights and amazing architecture and all sorts of people.I had big British breakfasts in cafes and had some very nice dinners out in lovely restaurants. All clean and well priced.I went to the amazing zoo and the museums. There were all sorts of things to do and see, that I’m glad I have seen and done.I will be going back for a holiday for sure.

I forgot to add one thing – the worst thing about London is tea.

I went into a godforsaken place (can’t remember where it was , but it was somewhere central).

I ask for a cup of tea, they hand me a paper cup filled with some dirty dishwater lookalike liquid (which was presumably a mix of hot water and milk) and hand me a teabag to put in it.

Lol, I was like … where am I ?   :negative:

Needless to say I didn’t drink it.

If the tea they serve here is similar to what I was served in central London, no thanks.

Much prefer our own ‘up norf”.

Excuse me for going off track a minute – but this is what ‘ Afternoon/High Tea’ looks like “Up Norf” :good:

That’s what afternoon tea looks like in Harriet’s in Cambridge.

Also in Kenwood House, from my memory.

    But the price is high.

If you thought the cuppa tea comprising hot water, milk and a teabag was gross,

you should have tried lee’s in Camden, now closed.

Lee’s must be the cafe featured in Withnall and I.

A huge mug of tea. I put my teaspoon in the middle of the cup, and it took a few seconds to fall slowly to the side of the cup. It tasted solid.

The mash was standard refectory food – for a World War 2 refectory.

When a fight broke out once, the sweeper went dead still and nearly disappeared into the wall, as though his body were saying ‘I am not here’.

The Polish woman who served would then roll up her sleeves and she soon stopped any fight.

    Big Olga was her name??

A great london cafe. To be seen to be believed.
