1957: Britain drops its first H-bomb
Britain has exploded its first hydrogen bomb as part of a series of tests in the Pacific, the Ministry of Supply has announced.
Details of the bomb, described only as a “nuclear device”, are sketchy. The term “device” indicates that it was an experimental explosive rather than a fully developed weapon.

It was almost certainly part of the thermo-nuclear weapons programme which was started in December 1954 to develop the megaton hydrogen bomb, which is as powerful as one million tons of TNT.

1979: Price of milk shoots up
The price of milk is to go up by more than 10% to 15p a pint from the beginning of next month.
The rise is far higher than expected, and means that milk is now three times the price it was five years ago.

Making the announcement, the Agriculture Minister Peter Walker said pre-election delays by his Labour predecessor, John Silkin, were to blame for the size of the increase.

“It’s a rise that should have taken place in April,” he said. “I inherited a dairy industry whose costs had risen, and producers whose costs had risen also.”

David Cameron ignored the traditional niceties of the Queen’s Speech debate today to tear into Labour’s record in office and complain that Gordon Brown’s Government had left the country in an “appalling mess”.

    nothing changes eh
