    Back on topic.

Another story that I’m happy to share.

Several years ago I had a neighbour, Bill, who was a landscape gardener. Bill was in his 70s yet looked 50; he was always in shorts, tshirt (optional when the weather was hot) and workboots; he was fit, with muscle developed from work and a six pack that men less than half his age would have died for. He was a lovely man and we became friends when he did my hard landscaping which took several weeks and many cups of tea!

A couple of years later and age was taking its toll, Bill went into hospital for a hip replacement op. While there he contracted MRSA which affected his balance and he found himself dependant on a mobility scooter to get around. Him and his partner had to give up the house they loved and moved to a bungalow in the next town. He was a proud man and after the move I only saw them very occasionally in the supermarket.

Then one night, the Thursday night before Good Friday, I had a dream but it didn’t really feel like a dream. At the time I was doing a course that required us to write down any dreams that we had and as I rarely remembered dreams this was proving to be a challenge, so when I remembered this one I made detailed notes of it!

In the dream I was walking, my feet were on a solid surface but all I could see was pure white. There, walking towards me was Bill, looking very dapper as I had never seen him before: a mid-grey shiny suit that was well cut and looked expensive, a white shirt and a distinctively coloured striped tie, his hair was neatly combed. He looked at me with his lovely deep blue eyes and his face crinkled into a smile as he said “Hello Jen, lovely here isn’t it? Peaceful. And look, I can walk again! Anyway, nice to see you, see you again.” and off he walked.

Fast forward 4 months and I’d all but forgotten the dream. I was in the supermarket when I bumped into Joan, Bill’s partner, we chatted and I asked after Bill and she told me that Bill had died that April. I was shocked, gave her my sympathy and best wishes, then we parted to continue with our shopping. As I carried on with my shopping my dream started coming back to me, and as I was going through the checkouts I felt compelled to tell Joan about my dream, whilst also thinking “don’t be stupid, she’ll think you’re a fruitcake!” Joan is a very pragmatic, down to earth, no-nonsense kind of person but I still felt compelled to tell her.

I waited outside until Joan came out and started by saying “you’re probably going to think I’m nuts but I have to tell you about a dream I had just before Easter.” and so I told her. At the end she broke into a big smile and gave me a huge hug. Then she told me that the suit was mohair, that it was the most expensive suit that Bill had ever bought and he’d been extrememely proud of it; he was buried in the suit and a white shirt with a tie just like the one I’d described. Then she asked my permission to share the dream with his two sons who were struggling to come to terms with his death…how could I refuse?

RIP Bill, you were a true gentleman. xx
