Do the horses really need to be put down
It depends on the injury pete, very often if a horse breaks a leg because of their weight it breaks in more than one place and very often breaks through the skin and splinters, this itself can cause infection and further suffering unlike dogs they dont do well trying to distribute around 1000lbs of body weight on 3 legs.
You cant easily put a horse in plaster and keep them from moving they have to be put in slings to keep the weight off and the facilities for physio in water is usually required for a semi full recovery after, a facility alot of people dont have.
The hardest thing to achieve is to keep the animal still and rested enough to allow the bones to set and that is if you have managed to move the animal to a place they can be put in a sling without doing further damage to the original break or fracture which is what very often happens.
Also long term they tend to spend the rest of their lives suffering from such injury due to poor bone infusion which isn’t fair on the animal.5 April, 2008 at 9:57 pm #323643what she really means is they wont be able to race again and therefore wont be of any financial use to their owner, so why bother to feed and home them anymore? far easier to put them down isnt it CUN.TS
5 April, 2008 at 10:00 pm #323644I’d imagine it probably is easier

cant compare a horse to any other pet. A horse hurts its leg it means serious threat to the rest of its days.

People like you make a living out of horses misfortunes and you call me selfish??
Yeah I would say save the animals life EVEN if it meant 12 weeks of pain….how many family pets suffer injuries which take months to heal but their owners pay the expensive vet fees and nurse their animal through temporary pain because they love them to pieces and know they will get better. You can say these people have the horses best interests at heart but its all bollo.cks. They reap the profits while the animal is healthy and making them money, as soon as an injury occures, they put them down, because they cant race anymore.
If one of your family members suffered a hoffific injury which meant months of pain, should they be put out of their misery and given a lethal injection??
