4 May, 2008 at 11:15 am #333277I don’t have Sky, so I miss seeing most of the games i would want to watch. I have to trawl the internet to find results. When the most exciting games in the year are not on terrestrial TV you have to wonder.
I know I can go to a pub to watch, and I often go to the gym and watch there. It pishes me off though. It wasn’t that long ago all the good games were scheduled on BBC 1 or ITV. Oh, and before you all say I am a cheapskate and should get Sky Sports packages, I can’t. I cannot have cable installed or a statellite dish due to where I live.
I know this is not the main thrust of this thread, but when money dictates which teams get the best players, and the lack of money (insolvency) is used to punish teams and supporters alike, and when the the cost of following your team is just too expensive, and our main tv channels cannot afford to schedule the games, it is important to recognise that football, like all sports, is about playing the game, and playing it well. It shouldn’t be about money at all.
And that is happening up and down this country, and you can get to see if for nothing, and it is exciting and exhilerating, and you can cheer from the side lines, and hug the people who play well, and go and watch the award ceremonies. We still give credit to those that succeed, and they are acknowledged and can feel proud. And they do it for the love of it. I am now off to watch a mate’s son get his award for man of the year.
4 May, 2008 at 12:09 pm #333278Most of our weekends are taken up by footy. My son has been playing since he was 6 for the same useless team, (he is now 11) and his devotion and the rest of the players, their families and not to mention their manager/trainer is to me what it is all about.
Many of the players could have uped and left by now, and their manager, but we are the most loyal team in the league, every other manager comments on it when we go to matches.
We are now all great friends with each other, have great banter about who we support etc, and have a jolly good time.
Then its home to watch sky because far from being able to afford tickets to watch our chosen teams, we would never be able to get there on time as the lads football comes first and ALWAYS will.
We may support what you call “glory hunting” teams, but it still hurts like hell when you dont win nowt. Whether you be top of the table or bottom, support isnt just in the stadiums it is everywhere.
And we all hurt when we lose. I cant imagine relegation, it must be horrendous, but the good thing we all say about footy to keep us chipper is…..
“there is always next season”!!! xx
Lets not even talk about England not being in the Euro’s and ruining summer too…….
4 May, 2008 at 1:38 pm #333279Shazza what i mean by glory hunters are people who follow a team and have never been there
Two lads at work follow man u never been to Manchester in their lives .In fact i probably no who plays for them more than they do
Then when man u win they come in on a Monday shouting come onnnnn That’s Glori hunting in my eyes
Has for sky i dont agree BBC1 and ITV used to show the football all the time on a sat Now people like my old man get the fixtures at the beginning of the season and books what ever days he needs off working shifts he dont get every weekend off
Then half way though sky decide to move a fixture and the clubs bow down because they get paid x amount of money of sky Not a thought for the fans who work nights and its been moved to a 8 o’clock kick off or moved from a saturday to a Sunday
And shazza as for relegation you would think by now i would be used to it But believe me it hurts more than most people would understand
Has i get told day in day out ITS ONLY A GAME
But its a game i love a game i have followed for over 30 years
4 May, 2008 at 2:47 pm #333280I know, and we will continue to be suckered in cos its in our blood
