I think we just said the same thing kent in different ways….. we can have an online repartee and feel at ease with people but as you say they are not necessarily friends. Exchanging telephone numbers takes that interaction one step further on the road to real friendship. Im not a suspicious person as I said i try not to judge… I accept chatting for what it is … just fun. I have no hidden agendas… simples :D

I read this thread with interest and for those people who feel they have an inbuilt ability… I wish you luck with your analysis of people here …. I can tell you though through personal experience IT DOESN’T WORK, if you do not fit into the pigeon holes people create for you here you are labelled a fake.
I try to just accept people for what they are and not judge. I know people tell lies and fantasise here maybe for them thats part of the online experience, each to his own.
As far as having real online friends… sorry I dont think thats truly possible. Im sure you can chat to people and build a repartee but really no more than that. To truly know someone you have to meet them face to face… or maybe thats just me and why i dont build friendship’s here or maybe its a generational thing… who knows?
One thing is sure though, its not possible through the written word to analyse a persons honesty and integrity and to think you can is just plain dangerous.
What you fail to include is that most people who have a friendship online extend it using more than the written word these days…..

I think it’s possible to have good online friends. You have to remember that even our “normal” friends don’t necessarily know everything about you. Only a best friend would…or a few extremely close friends. I think if you are a suspicious type and always think you don’t fully know that person is telling the truth then you will never make genuine online friends or indeed you yourself won’t be genuine. It all depends why and how things pan out. I’m sure when chatrooms and so forth started we didn’t all sit down …turn the pc on…and think “right who do I make friends with”…you either connect with someone or you don’t…there a fair few people I really really like in JC chat and have a laugh with them and I feel get on with them very well, but don’t actually consider them as friends, but people I see in the room. I don’t mean that to sound nasty or anything..just if phone numbers of M S N isn’t exchanged a friendship cannot develop maybe?
Couldn’t of said it better, myself! There are a few people that i’ve extended more then my msn to, those fair few i consider to be really good friends i’ve made over the years and hey maybe that makes me gullible or naive but we take these risks in real life too, don’t we? Of course that’s not to say i trust every Tom, Dick and Harry  :D

Agree!!
I mean just like in real life, you may fall out and make up again etc, assuming you are both honest and not some con artist, it’s just like a real life scenario really.

12 September, 2011 at 2:59 pm #477730Depends Lucy, I mean how close you are.
I would meet a few from here and I can’t say we are terribly close either, but it’s nice meeting new people etc.
Depends how long you’ve known them too.
