What are your thoughts of having an international day to remember the victims of the Holocaust? Personally I think it’s about time. History has a tendency of repeating itself. I think it’s extremely important that the topic comes up at least once a year so our children know of the tragedy that occurred not so long ago. BTW – I finished the book Night by Elie Weisel this weekend. It’s fascinating, disturbing and terrifying about what he went thru at Auschwitz. Extremely good book if you’re interested.
24 January, 2007 at 3:40 pm #257583Nah – bad idea. If you have one for the Jews then everybody would want a Memorial Day for their group. You’d spend all year remembering dead people from the last hundred years or more. There’d be no end to it.
They should let it go and move on. After all it’s the 21st Century now!!!

My point proven PB – =D>
In my opinion, the international community has become desensitized.24 January, 2007 at 6:58 pm #257586@American Woman wrote:

In my opinion, the international community has become desensitized.I don’t agree with ”desensitised” … more like bored bloody senseless.
I mean, it’s not as if the Jews were the only group murdered by the Nazis. They slaughtered a whole range of groups from gypsies through homosexuals, communists, dwarves, cripples, the insane, etc etc. You don’t hear THEM go on and on about it do you?
If you want to argue on a numerical basis then Uncle Jo Stalin did in (allegedly) some 20 million Russians in his lifetime – which kinda puts the Jews into perspective. THEY don’t go moaning on about Holocausts and want the entire world to mourn their loss do they???
The last Century is in fact littered with dictators who presided over the slaughter of their so-called enemies. Do we have an International Pol Pot Day of Mourning??? No we don’t.
As I said, the whole thing happened some time before the middle of the last Century. It’s over and done with and it’s way past time to move on.
24 January, 2007 at 10:59 pm #257587There are wars going on now that nobody cares about. I read yesterday about a soldier being killed, he was an 18 year old lad.
I read about the dramatic rescue mission where soldiers had to cling onto the outside of a helicopter to rescue a downed soldier so his family can at least lay him to rest.
If people dont give a toss about whats going on now they aren’t going to be overexcited about what happened in the last century.
Ive read tons of stuff about ww2, fiction and non fiction and its scary stuff. Shame its not taught in schools anymore. The history kids learn now is rubbish.
So, I blame education, there you go!
24 January, 2007 at 11:28 pm #257588There ya go Sharon … it’s ‘educashun innit’??? … blame the teachers.
Hey Adolf Hitler had a teacher once, maybe it was their fault that the Holocaust happened.
Let’s have an International Blame The Teachers Day, where we can list all their crimes against humanity and burn them all at the stake or something!!!
24 January, 2007 at 11:47 pm #257589Its about time they were accountable for all they have done to the country, lets get Tommy on the case!
25 January, 2007 at 4:34 am #257590I don’t think we should move on, as we need to remember – although I agree with PB if you have an international day for one thing – you must have it for all atrocities.
It does start with us and I try to be good…but sometimes when I come on here..I just want to mess around and I don’t think about peoples feelings. I should look at this when I’m not so tired… is a whole other thread . lol
25 January, 2007 at 5:58 am #257591We all seem to concentrate on Europe and the “Holocaust” between 1939-45, but what about all the Asians and POW’s who died at the hands of the Japanese?
Do we all remember the Armenians who die at the hands of the Turks in 1914-18?
The main problem I have with “Holocaust” day is the fact nothing has changed in the last 60 year’s.
From Cambodia to Rwanda people have been killed in there thousands without any intervention or hindrance.
Maybe instead of remembering the dead, we should try and save the living.
