    Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.

    first thought of in a field of seveeral thousand French prisoners surrounded by panzers and German troops in 1940.

    first played in a Stalag prison camp, with Messiaen insisting on his Jewish mate being in the quartet; they were dressed in prison uniform and ill-fitting boots as they played. The German commandant, a music lover, deleted the racial origins form teh records to allow this.

    The music is awesome.
