The onyl fancy dress outfit I can find for my little one is a pumpkin (he’s 17 months). I don’t want him to be a pumpkin, everyone else that age will be a pumpkin

trick or Treat my Erse.. we used to go guising. Round near neighbours and ya HAD to do a turn, sing a song, tell a joke or something. All this stick a duffel coat on backwards malarky doesnt wash with me. Im totally against it.! and its HAD its Day. Encouraging bairns to go round strange houses, and bothering old dears watching Corrie.
Pah to Americanised ideas, of what was once a simple pleasure of dressing up.

Aye out we went guising , dressed up in costumes we had planned for weeks . Sugar puffs wiped in the soot of the chimney then stuck to my nose with mums eyelash glue , little tufts of carpet fluff stuck on for that hairy effect . My mum did the best hairy withches warts ever , the other kids were so jealous !! Cries of oooo will yer mum make a wart for me !!

Traipsing round the village with a turnip lantern with a string handle . All the flesh scooped out , a scary face carved into it . a candle ( usually kept for power cuts in those days ) wobbling about inside. Health and safety would probably say nowadays that the string should be fire retardent . As the candle flame slowly blackened the neep inside you were accompanied into every house by that smell of farts that cooked turnip makes .

There was no trick or treat , only treat . Doors were chapped , ” are you hauding halloween ” Everyone was ! Your wee group of friends ushered into the good room to the assembled audience. you sang or performed your practiced poem and were rewarded with much praise and admiring of costume and of course a handful of treats for your poly poke. You met friends in the street and discussed which houses were giving out the best home made tablet or toffee apples and made a rush to their door . Happy days indeed .

This year i will be mostly wearing black with green make up and a very fetching pointy hat that is dug out every year . My 18 month old neice and my sister ( 28 and a half ) will be donning matching black and pink witches outfits , the little one has the most gorgeous pink and black striped tights to go with her rigoot . My mum will be joining us , I will do her make up as per usual ( in return for all the years that she made my warts ) . My brother ( 27 and a half ) will be wearing a black hooded cloak and the mask from Scream . I know it is him inside this outfit but he still scares the bejesus out of me every year . There will be much hilarity as we get ready then as soon as it is dark we will be off to visit friends in the village . Happy Halloween to you all when it comes !

Ohhhhhhhhh I love Halloween !! It’s my Birthday!!!! Wohooooo! Specially when I was a child. Birthday parties, then off to Trick or Treat with friends.

That’s sooo good to hear! My son was born the day before Halloween and last year (his 1st birthday) was fun, we had a big costume party for him. But this year, there is so much going on that he’s just getting a little party with my mom, sisters and I. What a jipp! Now, I’m worried that he’s not going to have big parties because there is always so much going on around Halloween.

happy days shinny.. but im sure we got a tanner or sixpence , maybe im slightly older than you :) i was only wee and i only got to go cos my older sister was there as well. was local bairns from the same street. ye were not chapping on a strangers door, back then. heck i was Mary poppins for 2 years, transmorphed with a easter bunnet and my mammies chiffon scarf strategically placed !

alas. the old days leave us. I have just spent the last 2 hours breaking into my own back garden ! its like Fort Knox with Extensions and Get AFF my land mentality. We got a neighbour to open her gates eventually to allow 2 wee local junkies to cut my grass !

hehe. im a tadger too as i make sure they do it good. But im a firm beleiver in IF their willing to get Aff their erses and at least cut grass, then they deserve their shilling. Folks are horrified. but i have known them since they were in nappies. and in a strange way, makes me feel more secure when they see the bother i have letting them into a garden area.

and if they come to trick or treat me id break their legs :)

Ive said it before, will say it again. Tis the only time of the year that we let our kids go take sweeties from strangers

Never did it as a kid, wont let mine do it either.
They did dress up and have treats as we always had parties or we would take them round to our families if we didnt have parties

when i was a kid there were no strangers where we lived . It was a tiny village where everyone knew everybody . As children we knew every person in every house , even if it was as ” wee clarty Bobs granny ” . At Halloween we accepted home made treats and fruit and nuts ( i didnt know anyone with a nut allergy , i didnt even know nut allergy existed ) without question of anything sinister just as we accepted at any other time of the year sandwiches or a drink of juice ( all drinking from the same bottle omg ) from any parent or sibling that turned up at the river or the park where we played. If you fell and skint your knee anybodys mum would do to clean it up at the kitchen sink and give u a hug and send u back out to play.

Today I am fortunate enough to live in a very similar kind of village but I know the children going round my village this year will be accompanied by a selection of parents. :(

Rubes i do remember getting money and a tangerine sometimes when the tablet or treacle toffee had run out but I have no memory of money before decimalisation lol Loving the thought of you as Mary Poppins :) I was the front end of a donkey one year and one of ken dodds diddy men another year complete with huge pyjama trousers attached to a hula hoop held up with braces . We hadnt thought of the logistical problems of getting through peoples doorways wearing a hula hoop . I wish there were photos !!

thats what im saying Hen. I live in a Street of say (calculates) 30 houses. we all knew each other. Grew up together etc. and that was the ONLY reason even back in 1960 something was i allowed to go. More now it gets later and later and 9 year olds are chapping at doors at the back of ten oclock. dressed as ghoulish delights that are a pervs dream. wee lassies in stockings etc. ( even pull ups) . im like “oh away home ffs” then ye get the wee chancers that dont even bother dressing and send in the most vulnerable one !

    pah !
