As Hurricane Gustav hurtles towards New Orleans, threatening to be the worst of the century; as floods devastate the Indian state of Bihar, stranding thousands and leaving them homeless; I harden my heart against the pictures of fleeing masses, until I hear a baby crying, then I’m finished.
What does it for you?31 August, 2008 at 10:51 pm #368572Pretty much the same.
How can such an evil natural occurance happen to the same people again.
With little help.
Talk about getting on your feet and getting knocked down again.
31 August, 2008 at 10:54 pm #368573OMG ive been watching this on the news, it must be terrifying for the people there. Its supposed to be a category 5, the worst this century, mandatory evacuation…it doesnt get any more serious than this. I feel really bad for the people out there, just goes to show you, possessions mean nothing when it comes down to it, a lot of these people will come back to nothing.
What does it for me? Obviously its upsetting to hear about the effects on the people out there, but you know me..im an animal person, it tears me up to think about all the abandoned animals that will be left alone after this devastation.
Oh …and I was wondering about this before, the names of hurricanes, I assumed that they followed in alphabetical order, ie the next one will begin with H. Who names them? and is there any particular reason behind the names?

I too hate to think of the animals.
Elephants were hugely effected in Thailand after the wave. Devastating.
People will probably call me a c.unt for that, but my cousin and uncle live there and I had the worst boxing day ever that year waiting to hear they had made it. They lost people they knew.
1 September, 2008 at 3:29 am #368575It’s odd, but thinking of all the creatures that meet their demise like cats, dogs, elephants, and such, humanizes the tragedy. I imagine entire worlds of insects disappear as well, and that for a time, when the waters subside, the land underneath has been denuded of most of its life. Perhaps, just as astonishing as the power of nature to destroy, is its ability to resurrect. These devastated areas come back with alacrity, and seem to be even richer than before. Still, sucks if you live there.

the world meteorlogical service names them they used to be all female names. Dunno who picks the names or whether theyre still done in alphabetical order (they used to be) but if the storm is particularly damaging that name isnt used again for another storm
